A Long Beach police officer who was shot in the head during a routine traffic stop remained in critical condition Saturday as authorities announced the arrests of two men they believe gunned him down to free a motorist the officer was holding in his patrol car.

A 25-year-old man, one of three men whose bodies were found in the Angeles National Forest over the weekend, was identified Thursday as Michael Haines, 25, a former resident of Akron, Ohio. The stabbed and shotgunned bodies of Haines and Benjamin Velez, 33, of Baldwin Park were discovered at 2:30 a.m. Sunday by two men who stopped at a roadside pullout near East Fork Road and California 39, sheriff's deputies said.

Then the Volunteers' Leonard Scott took off, and Tennessee won, 37-20, at Knoxville, Tenn. Abel Dominguez has no recollection of the afternoon he sat in his police cruiser, writing a ticket, and got shot in the head. What happened Aug. 6 is not even hazy to him. "I have no memory of that day whatsoever--not from the time I woke up," he said. It was many weeks before the Long Beach police officer learned that he had been shot three times.
