There were the typical opening night flourishes, the usual video and audio blasts of power designed to stun the senses or at least jolt them into pregame submission. But the most impressive sleight of hand, albeit old school, came about an hour later at Staples Center, in the second period Tuesday. In less than five minutes, the Kings managed to transform an ordinary-looking game, almost January-like, into something special on their way to a 5-0 victory over the St. Louis Blues before a sellout crowd.

If Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown and Teddy Purcell would have vowed to end their lengthy goalscoring droughts in the same game, their teammates would have laughed. Kopitar hadn't scored a goal in 13 games. Brown's drought was 14. Purcell was 0 for 26 games, since the Kings' third game this season, and he had also been scratched from the lineup twice. But in the most improbable of circumstances, against the most formidable of foes, each scored a goal Wednesday against the West-leading San Jose Sharks.

VS. CALGARY When: 7:30. Where: Staples Center. On the air: TV: FS West. Radio: 1150. Records: Kings 17-10-3, Flames 18-7-3. Record vs. Flames: 0-1-0. Update: Coach Terry Murray chatted with Anze Kopitar, who has no goals in his last 12 games. "We're a team that relied on him and looked to him in the early part and he came through for us," Murray said. "Inevitably . . . when there's a high level of performance, there's going to be a cycle where you start to drop off a bit. I'm hoping it starts to get back on the climb again real soon."

So, what's a stick in the face between friends and linemates? Dustin Brown's stick inadvertently clipped center Anze Kopitar in the face late in the second period and the Kings' leading scorer went down and stayed down for a moment or two before getting up. Scare averted. That was one of the rare moments of concern Saturday afternoon for the Kings in a relatively straightforward 4-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers at Staples Center. The Kings, now in fourth place in the Western Conference, are 5-1-1 in their last seven games and face the Ducks on Sunday at Anaheim.

Determination has the Kings leading the New Jersey Devils, 2-0, through two periods in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final at Staples Centeron Monday. Goaltender Jonathan Quick has a toll booth in front of the net, and the Devils lack a token. Alec Martinez and Dwight King were persistent at the crease, getting whacks at the puck. King finally knocked it in for a 1-0 lead 5 minutes 40 seconds into the period. Anze Kopitar never quit, skating up ice, where he was in position to chip in a shot for a goal 15:07 into the period.

Who said training camp was boring? So far, the Stanley Cup champion Kings have made one trade and it was revealed Monday that defenseman Willie Mitchell had knee surgery a couple of months ago, and later Anze Kopitar tested his injured knee in a brief session. Mitchell, who suffered a setback following surgery during the lockout, pushed too hard too soon during his rehabilitation, according to Kings General Manager Dean Lombardi. Still, the fact that Mitchell had surgery came as something of a surprise.

Every goal Anze Kopitar scores, every save Jonathan Quick makes, every shoulder-to-body message Dustin Brown sends, Dave Taylor is there. The Kings are in the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1993, a massive rebuilding project that General Manager Dean Lombardi has nearly completed. Taylor, his predecessor, left him some building blocks. Brown, Kopitar and Quick - the three essential ingredients in this playoff run - were Taylor draft picks, though he is quick to pass the praise like a puck.

TAMPA, Fla. — The Kings are nearly unbeatable when scoring at least three goals. Too bad for them it has happened only 16 times this season. Kyle Clifford and Dustin Penner had second-period goals to lead the Kings past the Tampa Bay Lightning, 3-1, Tuesday night. Anze Kopitar also scored for the Kings, who are 15-0-1 when scoring three goals or more. Jonathan Quick, who began the game with a 2-0-0 record and a 0.38 goals-against average in three games against Tampa Bay, made 24 saves.

A few good shifts and missing an open net in the third period of the Kings' 2-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday apparently earned winger Trent Hunter a spot on the first line Monday against San Jose. Coach Terry Murray, whose team has scored seven goals in the last four games, revamped his top three lines in practice Sunday to promote Hunter. Although the veteran has no goals and two assists in 11 games and has averaged only 11 minutes and nine seconds' ice time, he's expected to play on Anze Kopitar's right.

They are hockey's equivalent of a quick cleaning, a sure-fire way to spiff up the place before getting to the serious stuff later. Yes, things often look a lot better after a game against the struggling Buffalo Sabres. The Kings have been struggling on the penalty kill, dealing with injuries to forwards Jeff Carter and Jarret Stoll and defenseman Matt Greene and inconsistency. Those concerns eased Thursday night after the Kings beat Buffalo, 2-0, sparked by power-play goals from centers Mike Richards and Anze Kopitar at Staples Center.
