Arizona's coronation may have been premature. Oregon's demise may have been exaggerated. And UCLA is . . . well, UCLA. People still aren't quite sure. The jury is also out on California and Arizona State, who lurk just off the pace in the standings. The Pac-12 Conference basketball regular season has three weeks left and a few things have changed since the start of league play in early January. Back then, Arizona was ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press media poll, Oregon was No. 10 and Colorado No. 20. Heading into this week's games, Arizona still sits at No. 4 - but has issues.

The rich just got richer. Signing players from 15 states, Alabama Coach Nick Saban continues to have the magic touch in college football recruiting. Both Rivals- .com and Scout.com proclaimed Alabama's recruiting class No. 1 in the nation on Wednesday. "They got a stud at every single position," said Greg Biggins, a national recruiting analyst for Scout.com. "There's not one single area that they didn't fill with an impact type of kid. They can recruit nationally unlike anyone right now. They're on a different level.

More than a week after Arizona State University suspended a fraternity for a Martin Luther King Jr. weekend party mocking black people, the local chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon apologized on social media - on the orders of the fraternity's international headquarters. In a letter addressed to ASU and the Tempe community, the Beta-Xi chapter wrote on its  Facebook page  Thursday afternoon that it was sorry for "the offensive and racially insensitive conduct in which a few members of our chapter recently engaged.

The last time USC's basketball team defeated the top-ranked team in the country was 44 years ago, and that span is still growing. There is no denying the marquee abilities UCLA freshman Zach LaVine can bring to a game. He gave a sparse crowd at Pauley Pavilion a peek of those Sunday. LaVine's 19 points in UCLA's 87-72 Pac-12 Conference victory over Arizona State won't jump off the stat sheet, as he was one of five Bruins in double figures. But what he did during an eight-minute stretch in the first half should get the chatter going around the water cooler. He scored 15 points to fuel a 20-8 run that gave UCLA (13-3 overall, 2-1 in Pac-12 play)

Two games into Pac-12 Conference play and UCLA already faces a make-or-break moment. After the Bruins lost to top-ranked Arizona on Thursday, Coach Steve Alford labeled Sunday's game against Arizona State "vital. " Vital, two games into a 16-game conference season? Well, he has a point, when the Bruins (12-3 overall, 1-1 Pac-12) face the Sun Devils (13-3, 2-1) in Pauley Pavilion. "There is a lot of season left, but when you're trying to stay in a conference race, teams that lose multiple home games, especially early, makes a difficult climb," Alford said.

There were moments Thursday in which UCLA seemed to find its basketball program. For once, Pauley Pavilion wasn't better suited as a student study hall. Arizona, the top-ranked team in the nation, was teetering. UCLA was in an eight-clap frenzy and closing fast. Yet all the Bruins had in the end was stiff-upper-lip coach-speak after a 79-75 Pac-12 loss. "Those are strides," UCLA Coach Steve Alford said. "I would like those strides to be made in wins, but we have seen strides.
