A former Newport Beach health club manager was charged with extortion Monday after his arrest in the ransom kidnaping last week of Las Vegas gambling mogul Steve Wynn's daughter. Ray Marion Cuddy, 47, was arrested Sunday by a group of 14 officers from the FBI and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department when he arrived at Newport Imports to pay the $70,000 final installment on the purchase of a new, white Ferrari 512TR. Cuddy, a slight, silver-haired man with a deep tan, was charged in U.S.

Four teen-agers, including three juveniles, were arrested late Tuesday night in connection with the stabbing of a 19-year-old who was dumped along the Santa Ana River this week, police said Wednesday. "When you consider the young age of the people involved, this is a very unusual occurrence for this community," Police Lt. John FitzPatrick said. Ruben Sanchez, 19, remains in critical condition at an undisclosed hospital where he was taken Sunday night with multiple stab wounds.

Anaheim police arrested 17 suspected graffiti vandals during a Friday morning sweep, ending an investigation in which officers infiltrated tagging groups at two Anaheim high schools. Two officers posed as students, attending classes, doing homework and going with taggers--even participating at times--as they marked freeway signs, walls and homes, police said. The arrests were part of the largest single sweep targeting suspected taggers in Orange County.

A Laguna Hills teenager died early Monday after being stabbed several times in his driveway, and a 20-year-old neighbor was arrested shortly afterward, police said. Before he died at the hospital, Kenneth Chiu, 17, told police that his assailant was his next-door neighbor, Christopher Charles Hearn, 20. Officers found Hearn on his own front porch. A large knife was recovered at the scene.

Police on Thursday chased and arrested five men who they said had cased a United Parcel Service truck and stolen two computers while the driver was making a delivery. The UPS driver had noticed a blue van following him as he made pickups and deliveries in the Irvine Spectrum area about 4:30 p.m., police said. When the driver went inside a business, the lock on his truck was broken and two boxes containing computers that the driver had just picked up from Advanced Logic Research were taken.

Two Irvine teens were in custody late Tuesday in a series of quick-hit arsons that gutted a popular UC Irvine hangout and came dangerously close to campus housing, leaving some to wonder whether they were the intended targets of the gasoline-fueled flames. The 15- and 17-year-old boys were arrested on suspicion of setting six early-morning fires, according to Irvine Police Lt. Sam Allevato, who said the pair stole a canister of gasoline that was used to set the blazes.

An unusual sting operation ended with the indictments of 20 people--including seven physicians--accused of doctoring nearly $59,583 in bogus medical bills, Orange County Dist. Atty. Michael R. Capizzi announced Tuesday. The 18-month probe, one of the longest in the prosecuting agency's history, involved setting up a "dummy" law firm that claimed to represent clients injured in car accidents.

A Tustin man accused of critically injuring the 2-year-old son of his live-in girlfriend was convicted of the same crime nine years ago, according to Orange County Superior Court documents. The injured boy is fighting for his life in the pediatrics intensive care unit at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, authorities said. "The homicide (detectives) are standing by" in case the boy dies, Sheriff's Lt. Robert Rivas said.

A man was arrested Monday after leading police on a wild chase through Orange County, stealing a Porsche in Irvine and a Suburban in Garden Grove and then barricading himself in a house in Compton, police said. The incident began shortly after 11 a.m. at Steve's Detailing Service in Irvine. An auto detailer there saw Edward Luis McCarter allegedly steal a Porsche and called police.

A West Covina man remained in custody without bail Friday in connection with the killing last month of a jewelry store owner during a robbery attempt, police said. Armand T. Washington, 19, was arrested Thursday night in West Covina and booked in Orange County Jail on suspicion of murder and robbery, Westminster Police Sgt. Tom Broderson said.
