Six escaped convicts from Alabama were captured in Tennessee on Thursday, two days after they broke out of a maximum-security prison by using a broom handle to lift an electrified fence. Authorities stumbled onto the group along a country road about 50 miles west of Nashville and 165 miles from the prison. They scattered and were caught without violence over an eight-hour span.

A man suspected of impersonating a police officer during the kidnapping and attempted rape of a Whittier woman was arrested Friday in Tennessee, authorities said. Anthony Ray Willis, 35, was in jail in Unicoi County, Tenn., awaiting extradition to California after being arrested at the home of a cousin, said Fullerton police Sgt. Linda King. Willis is believed to have identified himself as a police officer to a 21-year-old woman in a Fullerton parking lot on Commonwealth Avenue early Jan. 14.

A hard-core gang member, wanted for the fatal shooting of a Canoga Park man who accidentally bumped into him at a party, has been arrested in Tennessee, authorities said Friday. Kevin Germaine Hill, wanted by the Los Angeles Police Department on suspicion of murder and suspected of involvement in another homicide, was arrested in Memphis on Thursday by members of a multi-agency fugitive task force, police said.

Six inmates, including three convicted killers, escaped from a maximum security prison Sunday after handcuffing their guards to a chair and stashing them in a laundry room, officials said. Two of them were recaptured 18 hours later. Two of the prisoners, at least one armed with a homemade knife, had been allowed out of their cells to distribute meals for Ramadan at Riverbend prison, along the Cumberland River.

Tim Frost, 19, a freshman defensive back at Tennessee, was arrested early Sunday for allegedly firing a pistol at a Knoxville policeman called to a disturbance at a fraternity party. Frost, from Scottsdale, Ga., was charged with attempted murder and several weapons violations. He was released on $35,000 bond.

A 5-year-old kindergarten pupil was arrested after bringing a loaded pistol to school because he wanted to kill his teacher for punishing him with "timeout," according to police records. A woman listening to a police scanner she had gotten for Christmas picked up a conversation over cordless telephones and heard what turned out to be a murder plot unfolding, investigators say. Donna McGee tipped sheriff's deputies to what she had heard, and on Thursday a woman and her boyfriend were arrested and accused of conspiring to kill the woman's husband and make it look like a burglary gone awry.

After a two-year investigation, a 48-year-old man has been arrested in Tennessee on suspicion of killing his infant son, police said Wednesday. Stanley Jack Wyly, a former resident of Laguna Beach, was taken into custody just outside Nashville last week by Laguna Beach Sgt. Ray Lardie, who had been investigating since 3-month-old Benjamin Wyly died of head injuries in 1991. "We are very happy to have (Wyly) in custody," Laguna Beach Sgt. Lance Ishmael said.

The 6-foot senior guard finished with 83 points and two national records. About 150 purebred puppies destined for pet stores on the East Coast were found overheated in a broken-down cargo truck. Four died. The dogs were found Tuesday afternoon by mechanics who were fixing a flat tire and other problems that arose as the driver passed through Nashville. The driver, who was not identified, was charged with cruelty to animals and inhumane transport conditions. He is to appear in court June 7. The puppies were stacked in plastic pet carriers in the truck's cargo section.

A man suspected of killing three people during a three-state rampage that started with the death of a 25-year-old Oklahoma woman was arrested at a motel in Union City, Tenn. Steven Ray Thacker, 29, of Chouteau, Okla., was arrested and charged as a fugitive from justice and with the theft of a vehicle, Union City Police Chief Joe Garner said. He also is considered the prime suspect in the late December death of Laci Dawn Hill of Bixby, Okla.

Television actor Sasha Mitchell, wanted in Ventura County for violating probation in a wife-abuse case, was arrested Monday in Tennessee, then freed on bond after he pledged to return home to face a possible jail sentence, authorities said. Mitchell, 29, who rents a house on eight acres about 85 miles south of Nashville, was arrested by Franklin County sheriff's deputies, acting on a warrant issued here July 22.
