A celebration of the 50th anniversary of India's independence is expected to attract thousands of people to the Little India area of Artesia today. Starting at 10 a.m. with a health fair at Artesia Park, 18747 Clarkdale Ave., the festival is to include a two-hour parade featuring floats built by the event's sponsor, the Federation of Indo-American Assns. of Southern California. The procession will run along Pioneer Boulevard starting at Artesia Boulevard at 1 p.m. and end at the park.

Many came to pay respects to the leaders who died fighting for India's independence. Others came to give a sense of their ancient culture to children growing up in Southern California. Celebrating the Asian nation's 50 years of freedom from British rule, thousands of Indian Americans gathered Saturday afternoon in the Artesia business district that serves mainly immigrants from the subcontinent. For Arvind Jain, the day brought vivid memories of his childhood in New Delhi.
