Perhaps there were two painfully obvious signs after the first period that the Kings' playoff chances would dwindle by the end of the night as they lost to the San Jose Sharks, 4-0. One was the loud chants--Irbe! Irbe!--from the sellout crowd of 17,190 Friday night at San Jose Arena, signaling that Arturs Irbe, the tiny acrobatic goaltender, was showing his usual shutout form against the Kings. Next was the score after the first period.

The Toronto Maple Leafs had inspiration on their side. The Carolina Hurricanes had Arturs Irbe. Irbe stopped 31 shots in a 3-0 victory by the Hurricanes on Thursday, dousing whatever emotional boost the Maple Leafs had in welcoming back Coach Pat Quinn. Quinn made a surprising return after spending the last two days in the hospital because of an irregular heartbeat.

The Carolina Hurricanes signed goaltender Arturs Irbe to a multiyear contract, the team said. Terms were not disclosed Tuesday, but the News & Record of Greensboro, N.C., reported this week that Irbe, 31, earlier rejected a four-year proposal that started with a $2-million annual salary. Irbe would have become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Maybe Paul Maurice really does have two No. 1 goaltenders. Martin Gelinas, Rod Brind'Amour and Ron Francis scored early in each period for Carolina, and Arturs Irbe returned to play brilliantly in net as the Hurricanes beat the Montreal Canadiens, 5-1, Sunday to take a 3-2 lead in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Keith Primeau scored for the third time in four games and goaltender Arturs Irbe beat his former team as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Vancouver Canucks, 3-1, Tuesday night at Greensboro, N.C. The Hurricanes, who lost their season opener, had three home ties before finally winning. Irbe began the season as the backup to Trevor Kidd after being signed as a free agent in September from the Canucks. But with Kidd struggling, Irbe has started the last three games.

Playing without several key players, the Dallas Stars kept it simple for two periods. Then they let Arturs Irbe win the game. Irbe made 12 of his 24 saves in the third period to lead the visiting Stars to a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. Todd Harvey scored the only goal, capitalizing on a rare blunder by defenseman Keith Carney. "Irbe is the type of goalie who, if you don't get to him early, you're not going to get to him at all," Star Coach Ken Hitchcock said.

Arturs Irbe made 31 saves as the Vancouver Canucks ended a seven-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Friday night at Vancouver, Canada. Irbe took advantage of his first start in a month to post his sixth victory of the season and put an end to a horrible stretch of hockey for Vancouver, which won for the first time in 10 games. The Canucks were held to just one shot in the second period and only 14 in the game.

Someone yelled that soldiers were coming to drive them from the barricades, and who knew what might follow? Arturs Irbe would not leave, could not leave. He would stop them. He would be Ka Muris . After Soviet forces had killed protesters in Vilnius, Lithuania, for rebelling against the government's distant and oppressive rule early in 1991, citizens of Latvia--another Baltic state yearning for independence--protested that invasion.

Hirsch, 12-20-4 with a 3.27 goals-against average last season, was left unprotected in the NHL waiver draft last month. Rookies Jayson More, Jeff Odgers and Mike Sullivan scored second-period goals Tuesday night and the San Jose Sharks ended a six-game winless streak by beating the Vancouver Canucks, 4-1. The three consecutive goals enabled the Sharks to beat the Canucks for the first time in four meetings despite being outshot, 43-34. The Canucks lost for the third time in four games. Brian Mullen also scored for San Jose, which had gone 0-5-1 in its previous six games.
