President Alvaro Arzu escaped unharmed from an attempt on his life Sunday on the eve of a visit by Pope John Paul II, government officials said. Security guards shot and killed the assailant, who tried to ram his pickup truck into the president and his wife as they rode horses in Antigua, west of the capital. The incident occurred as thousands of police are mobilizing across Central America for the pontiff's weeklong tour, which begins today in Guatemala.

Guatemalan authorities are investigating whether escaped Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera is behind recent assassination attempts on the family of a retired Guatemalan general. Police in Guatemala believe that "El Chapo" may be hiding there and are investigating whether he ordered revenge hits Wednesday on the daughter and wife of retired Gen. Otto Perez Molina, the Reforma paper reported. The daughter was wounded and the wife unharmed.
