Colombia's ambassador to Hungary, wounded in a Jan. 13 assassination attempt by Colombian drug traffickers outside his Budapest home, was elected chairman of the 32nd U.N. Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna. Enrique Parejo, justice minister before his diplomatic posting, was a tough prosecutor of drug traffickers. Parejo, showing no visible signs of three gunshot wounds to the head in the January attack, received a standing ovation from delegates to the nine-day conference.

Colombia's ambassador to Hungary, a former justice minister and anti-drug crusader, was shot and seriously wounded by a lone gunman Tuesday outside his residence in an apparent assassination attempt by Colombian drug traffickers. Enrique Parejo Gonzalez was shot five times, Hungary's official news agency MTI said. He was listed in serious condition. An anonymous caller to United Press International in Bogota said a group calling itself the Hernando Botero Command was responsible.
