Jeff Johnston, a former instructor in UC Irvine's physical education department, will return to the university as the men's golf coach, Athletic Director Dan Guerrero said Wednesday. Johnston, 32, also will teach golf in the campus' recreation program, where he was assistant director from 1988-94. Tom Tift, who had been the interim golf coach, will be a volunteer assistant with the program, and Matt Gillis will continue as assistant coach.

Interviews for the vacant coaching jobs in baseball and women's basketball at Cal State Dominguez Hills will be conducted late next week, according to school officials. A pair of search committees have been reviewing job applications, according to sports information director Thomas Neff. The school had hoped to make appointments by July 15, but that deadline seems unrealistic now, Neff said. Recruiting players for the baseball team has been conducted by Athletic Director Dan Guerrero.

What did UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero do, get his football and basketball coaches at a two-for-one sale? Karl Dorrell almost beats USC and lays an egg against WAC opponent Wyoming. Ben Howland almost beats Arizona, then gets embarrassed by an overachieving Stanford team (the eighth time in a row at Pauley, no less). Key word, guys: "almost." Patrick McMahon Hermosa Beach

Juxtapose new UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero's comment, "I want student athletes who, on the playing field, have strong fundamentals, who fire out every night, who never take a night off" with Bob Toledo's, "The athletic director's job is to let the coaches coach and give them the weapons to get the job done." Guerrero views his position as Toledo's boss. Toledo sees Guerrero as his facilitator. My prediction is that basketball Coach Steve Lavin will grow under Guerrero's tutelage and Toledo will be replaced.

When I read that UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero had offered Karl Dorrell a contract extension, I could not believe it. But then it dawned on me that Guerrero, a pretty sharp guy, probably concocted the scheme to make his beleaguered coach score a couple of points with a public that is screaming for his head. I imagine the exchange went something like this: Guerrero: You know, Karl, there is no way I can offer you an extension. Almost everyone is calling for me to cut my losses and let you go now. Dorrell: But Dan, I have already fired the tight end coach.

Keith Stewart, UC Irvine's second-leading scorer, did not make the Anteaters' two-game trip because of a paperwork problem involving his academic eligibility, Athletic Director Dan Guerrero said Thursday. Stewart missed the team's victory over San Jose State and also will miss the game against Pacific in Stockton on Saturday, but Guerrero said he expects him to return for Monday's game against Cal State Long Beach.

Nancy Fortner of San Pedro will return to Cal State Dominguez Hills to take over the school's women's volleyball program, Athletic Director Dan Guerrero announced Wednesday. Fortner, 45, replaces Jennifer Gorecki, who resigned in December. Fortner guided the Lady Toro volleyball program from 1973 through 1978. In her last season the team was 18-6 and won the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference.
