UCLA Chancellor Albert Carnesale said Tuesday that university officials are in "very productive discussions" to extend the contract of Athletic Director Peter Dalis. The contract expires Dec. 31. Dalis, whose 18-year tenure ranks as the longest of any current athletic director in the Pacific 10 Conference, earns $159,500 a year. "I think he's done a superb job, as measured by almost any standard," Carnesale said.

UCLA announced Thursday that Athletic Director Peter T. Dalis has agreed to a contract extension that will run through the next 18 months. Dalis, 63, whose previous contract expired Sunday, is in his 18th year as athletic director. During his tenure, UCLA has won 36 of its 83 NCAA team championships. The school also has played in 12 bowl games and in the NCAA men's basketball tournament 13 times, including each of the last 12 years.

Jim Livengood said that he has signed a six-year contract to remain as athletic director at Washington State, withdrawing as one of five finalists for the athletic director's job at Iowa.
