The Atlanta Falcons gave up only a seventh-round draft pick Wednesday when they acquired four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel from the Philadelphia Eagles. The Falcons announced the trade after Samuel agreed to restructure his contract to a three-year, $18.5-million deal. His contract with Philadelphia called for him to earn $9.9 million in 2012 and $11.4 million in 2013. Samuel, 31, gives Atlanta a strong but high-priced trio at cornerback with Dunta Robinson and Brent Grimes under new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan . Grimes, who signed his franchise tag tender Tuesday, will make $10.262 million this season.

The concerns about Javy Guerra that Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly shared on Wednesday night were about his health, not his ability to close. Guerra was the losing pitcher for the second consecutive night, as he was charged with his second blown save of the season in a 4-2 defeat by Atlanta. The right-hander recorded only one out in the three-run, five-hit ninth inning by the Braves that dropped the Dodgers' record to 13-6. Three batters into the disastrous inning, a comebacker by Brian McCann struck Guerra on the right side of the jaw. Guerra remained in the game and a batter later, the 2-1 lead the Dodgers took on Matt Kemp's major league-leading 10th home run disappeared.

ATLANTA — Chris Paul limped out of the Clippers' training room Tuesday night, his mild left groin strain causing as much pain as his team's inexplicable performance against the Atlanta Hawks. He took the blame for the Clippers' 109-102 loss to the Hawks at Philips Arena, saying it was his job to have his teammates ready for a game that had so much importance. Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro was upset his team didn't play better, knowing it would have clinched at least fourth place in the West and the home-court advantage over the Memphis Grizzlies, whom they now will face in a first-round Western Conference playoff series.

African American women in six U.S. cities are becoming infected with HIV at a rate five times the national average for black women, and closer to the rates of some African countries, according to a new study. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University and around the country who made the findings suspected the rates were relatively high in these "hot spots" that have battled the epidemic for decades, but the numbers still came as a surprise in a field that tends to focus more on black and gay men. The researchers found that in Baltimore; Atlanta; Newark, N.J.; New York City; Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; and Washington, the annual rate of infection was 24 per 10,000 black women.
