One person was killed when a car plunged off the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and landed in shallow water near the shore of Yerba Buena Island after bouncing down the steep cliff. The victim was not immediately identified. The California Highway Patrol said the westbound car apparently struck a bridge support cable on the upper deck, flipped into the air and plummeted from the bridge down the side of Yerba Buena Island, halfway between San Francisco and Oakland.

State Sen. Art Torres (D-Los Angeles) suffered minor injuries Saturday when a speeding car in which he was a passenger went out of control, smashed into a concrete abutment and overturned. The accident occurred about 4 a.m. at a curve on a four-lane highway in the Hunters Point district, police said. The driver, Roberto Y. Hernandez, 32, of San Francisco was arrested for walking away from the accident scene and for driving under the influence of alcohol.
