Chrysler Corp. agreed Tuesday to buy Los Angeles-based Dollar Rent A Car, the nation's largest privately owned auto rental company and the fourth largest overall. Neither company would disclose the purchase price. When it was reported earlier this month that the two were talking, one source said the price would be $70 million to $90 million. But Dollar founder Henry J. Caruso said in a telephone interview Tuesday that such estimates were "way off base."

An Antelope Valley man was arrested Thursday in connection with the Aug. 22 slayings of the owner of a Lancaster car rental agency and an employee, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said. Michael Joseph Williams, 21, was arrested at 4 p.m. at an undisclosed location in the Antelope Valley and was being held without bail at the sheriff's station in Lancaster, Sgt. Larry Lincoln said.

HFS Inc. said its Avis Rent A Car Inc. unit agreed to buy its second-largest North American franchisee, First Gray Line Corp., for about $195 million in cash. First Gray has 70 locations throughout Southern California and the Southwest. In a separate deal Monday, Republic Industries Inc. agreed to pay $150 million for EuroDollar Holdings in a move designed to give it a foothold in Europe. In the last year, Republic has acquired several U.S. car rental companies.

The state Supreme Court refused Wednesday to interfere with the practice of some car rental companies of refusing to rent to drivers under age 25. The court unanimously denied review of a challenge to the practice by a man who said he was denied a rental by Hertz and offered rentals at extra charge by Budget and Alamo because of his age.

Hertz to Raise Rates: Hertz Corp., the world's largest car rental company, said Friday that it is raising all its non-contract car rental prices in the United States by $3 a day, effective March 1, a move that may prompt similar increases by rivals. Hertz declined to comment on a reason for the increase.
