Automobile classified advertising site AutoTrader.com plans to acquire one of the most venerable names in car shopping ? Kelley Blue Book. The pending deal, announced Tuesday, would give Atlanta-based AutoTrader two of the leading advertiser-supported go-to destinations for car buyers. The AutoTrader site, which launched in 1998, gets 15 million visitors a month viewing its buy and sell ads from dealers and consumers, the company said. Kelley Blue Book of Irvine provides price information on new and used cars.

Extending its Internet reach to the 40-million-plus annual used-car market, Ford Motor Co. said Tuesday that it is partnering with AutoTrader.com to display Ford dealers' used cars on the Web. The pairing of AutoTrader.com and FordDirect.com, which is a joint venture between Ford and its dealers, should at least double dealers' online offerings by adding their used-car inventory, said Devon Cohen, chief executive of FordDirect.

Other than hearing that your policy has been canceled, it's about the worst news you can get from your auto insurer: Sorry, your vehicle has been "totaled." But if you loved that car or truck, totaled doesn't always have to be the death sentence that the term implies. A totaled vehicle isn't always a mangled mess. Sometimes it's salvageable. At $3.8 million, a 30-second car commercial may have seemed expensive before Sunday's Super Bowl, but Monday morning quarterbacking shows it to be money well spent. The game between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers drew one of the largest audiences for any Super Bowl, with Nielsen reporting that 48% of households with a TV were tuned in. The bankruptcy of General Motors Corp., one of America's biggest advertisers, deals yet another blow to TV stations, newspapers and magazines that already are reeling from the recession. Sports franchises also could feel the sting, with analysts expecting the automaker to continue cutting back its multimillion-dollar sponsorships of professional teams. GM shelled out $2.1 billion on advertising last year, second only to Procter & Gamble Co., according to Nielsen Co.
