I've been thinking about Patricia Ward Biederman's column of Feb. 7. Thinking long and hard, because I can't figure out what her point was. Is Ms. Biederman taking hunters to the carpet? Gun store owners? People who saw "Rambo" at the local theater? Or a combination of all three? Apparently Ms. Biederman is assuming the awesome responsibility of exposing the dangerous and childish traits of the incorrigibles who buy firearms to the rest of her "normal" readers. Of course, she is performing a vital service by reporting that all gun nuts hate journalists and have no knowledge of the Constitution except for that ridiculously overblown Second Amendment.

San Fernando Valley gun enthusiasts said they were shocked, scared for their safety and disappointed by the House of Representatives passage of a bill banning assault weapons Thursday. But Shane Wehunt, 28, of Lancaster, did not just talk about his outrage, he took action. Even though he was on crutches--the result of a recent sports accident--he drove to North Hollywood to pay a visit to one of the most prominent gun shops in the area, B & B Sales. He ordered an Auto Ordnance brand .

Agents from the state attorney general's office seized records from two of California's biggest retail gun stores Tuesday in an investigation of whether customers are being overcharged for private-party gun transfer services, officials said. Agents searched two locations of B & B Sales, in Westminster and North Hollywood. In California, when private citizens want to sell guns, they must go to licensed gun dealers who broker the transactions.

Thomas White bought a 12-gauge shotgun from one of the city's largest gun stores just hours before he used it to kill himself and his girlfriend, former Edison High School girls' basketball star Krisden Yoshiko Tanabe, police said Monday. While sale of a handgun requires a 15-day waiting period under state law, White could buy and immediately take home the shotgun he used for Thursday's murder-suicide.

An enormous bear is the first thing you see when you enter B & B Sales in North Hollywood. It's a majestic, 1,250-pound Alaskan brown bear, expertly stuffed and displayed in a glass case worthy of the Natural History Museum. B & B Sales is the best-equipped gun shop in the Valley. You can buy any of more than 20,000 guns and other weapons there, including semiautomatic versions of the Uzi and the Galil, guns you see in American movies and against the walls of Middle Eastern cafes.

Councilman Mike Feuer on Wednesday joined a demonstration outside a North Hollywood gun store that has urged its customers to support Deputy Mayor Rocky Delgadillo, Feuer's opponent in next week's runoff election for Los Angeles city attorney. Flanked by sign-waving supporters, Feuer denounced B & B Sales for displaying, for a time, a "Delgadillo for City Attorney" sign on its marquee and distributing fliers urging a vote for the deputy mayor.

The head of one of the largest gun stores in Orange County announced Friday that he will stop selling military assault weapons like the AK-47 rifle that was used to kill five elementary school pupils in Stockton. Randy Garell, president of The Grant Boys store in Costa Mesa, said retail gun dealers must "wake up and face facts." "It's about time someone takes a stand," said Garell, who also sells camping and outdoor gear.

Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl F. Gates said Wednesday that he considers "unreasonable" a key portion of the city's tough new anti-assault weapon law and will continue to work for passage of a somewhat weaker state version he helped write. In his first public comments about the emergency law passed Tuesday, Gates said he opposes provisions allowing confiscation of assault weapons from all gun owners.
