Rafael Berumen scored 33 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Simi Valley High defeated Santa Clara, 82-76, to win the Simi Valley tournament Saturday night. Simi Valley (4-0), which trailed by 12 points late in the first half, caught Santa Clara, 51-51, with 2:15 to go in the third quarter after a 22-14 scoring run. The Pioneers gained a six-point lead but Santa Clara (3-1) pulled to within 70-67 with four minutes to play on a basket by Nick Jones before the Pioneers pulled away for good.

If there's a better point guard in the region than B.J. Ward of Santa Clara High, Coach Lou Cvijanovich sure hasn't seen one. "God almighty, I don't know what he can't do," Cvijanovich said. "He could stop on a dime, he could do anything. He's amazing."

Jennifer Shetters, a 6-4 post player from Wilson High in Portland, Ore., has signed a letter of intent with the Cal State Northridge women's basketball team. Shetters, who averaged 11.9 points and 10.1 rebounds last season, is the first player Matador Coach Frozena Jerro has signed this recruiting period. * Former Santa Clara High point guard B.J. Ward is expected to make his debut today for UC Santa Barbara, which hosts to Stanford in a 7 p.m. game.

Branduinn Fullove, a 6-foot-6 senior guard at Simi Valley High, has committed to UC Santa Barbara. "It's going to be a great place to go," said Fullove, who was also recruited by Wyoming. Fullove averaged 16.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists for Simi Valley, which reached the Southern Section Division I-A semifinals last season. Santa Barbara, under second-year coach Bob Williams, signed B.J. Ward and Nick Jones from Santa Clara and J.J. Todd from Chaminade last season.

Omelogo Udeze of Harvard-Westlake High has been selected Southern Section Division III girls' basketball player of the year, and Nick Jones and B.J. Ward of Santa Clara were selected Division V boys' co-players of the year. Udeze, The Times' Valley player of the year, led Harvard-Westlake to the state Division III final. Jones and Ward paced the Saints to the Division V state title.

Santa Clara 62, Pilgrim 44--With two of his top players fighting foul trouble, Santa Clara Coach Lou Cvijanovich pulled an ace from his sleeve and the Saints advanced to the Division V-AA semifinals with a victory at Daniel Murphy High. The ace was Ryan McGill, who stepped in for guard B.J. Ward and swingman Nick Jones to lead all scorers with 24 points and tie for the team lead with 10 rebounds. "That kid is tough," Cvijanovich said. "He's been doing that all year."

Rafael Berumen scored a game-high 32 points and No. 1-ranked Simi Valley High contained prolific scorer Gilbert Arenas as it advanced to the championship game of its own tournament with an 86-55 victory over Grant Friday night at Simi Valley. Arenas connected on nearly everything he put up, scoring 23 points, but his opportunities were limited by the Pioneers' defense.
