To retry or not to retry. That is the question for federal prosecutors after the dusky verdict in the John Edwards trial. The answer, according to a report in USA Today , is that the toothsome and well-coiffed former North Carolina senator will be spared another courtroom ordeal. That's probably the correct and prudential decision following Edwards' acquittal on one count and a hung jury on five others.  It's possible that a different jury might convict Edwards on the  charges  that stymied this one, but  it seems more likely that the evidence that left this (apparently conscientious)

Tyler Perry movies have always been about contrasting extremes, careening between saints and sinners, high drama and low humor, the gospel and the gutter. The latest entry in the brand, "Madea's Big Happy Family," maintains the template and then some, marking a return to safety after the mixed response that greeted Perry's last movie, an ambitious adaptation of the famous Ntozake Shange play "For Colored Girls. " Perry possesses a superb ear for the themes and emotions that connect him to his core audience, and that's on display again here, though the unconverted might grumble that the movie's many riffs and rants feel recycled from previous offerings.

"Hey, buds, let's party!" Sean Penn yelled out to the crowd on the last day of the Coachella music festival. And party they did. Not just on the ginormous carnival-like festival grounds but also at soirees around the desert. On April 26, the unofficial Prince pre-party took place at "Smurf Village," where a mushroom-filled walkway led bikini-clad revelers into a mansion in nearby Rancho Mirage. 1. Joel Madden of Good Charlotte hyped poolside partyers, including his baby mama, Nicole Richie, and Taryn Manning, by spinning the Beastie Boys as well as, yep, the Artist.

Hey, Daddy Warbucks, you already bought her the diamond earrings -- that "push present" to thank her for nine months of pregnancy and hours of labor -- but now Mother's Day is approaching. So for the new moms out there, we consulted Bel Bambini, a luxe baby shop in West Hollywood. If it's good enough for Jessica Alba, who is registered there, why not your Baby Mama? -- $4,000 Part hot rod, part stroller, this "Roddler" is a swank ride for the little one.

It has the makings of a trash-film lover's idea of heaven. In this corner, the filmmaking team of Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, credited as Neveldine/Taylor, purveyors of willful, gleefully disreputable movies like "Crank" and "Crank 2: High Voltage. " They are smart enough to know better and self-consciously shameless enough to go there anyway. And in this corner is Nicolas Cage, who has over time transformed into a performer of such ridiculous earnestness that it is impossible to unravel whether he gets it or not. Cage is the opposite of irony.

The basic message of "Deception" is that all that ultimately matters is a trustworthy relationship. That's the main reason, too, why the blackmail thriller, in theaters Friday, landed on 20th Century Fox's release schedule. Fox has a well-deserved reputation for narrowly focusing on easy-to-market movies with a clearly defined audience and built-in sales hooks: "Horton Hears a Who," "The Fantastic Four," "Live Free or Die Hard."

The news that TV funny ladies Amy Poehler and Tina Fey would co-host the Golden Globes on Jan. 13 was met with a chorus approval from fans when it was announced Monday. The appointment of two hilarious and accomplished, fortysomething  women to one of the most high-profile hosting gigs in Hollywood is certainly something to celebrate, but so is the prospect of seeing these frequent collaborators onstage together once again. Their partnership goes back to at least 2001, when Poehler joined the cast of “Saturday Night Live.” By then, Fey had been head writer at the legendary show for two years and had just started appearing in sketches.
