A teenager has been booked on suspicion of killing a 1-year-old boy he was baby-sitting, sheriff's deputies said Saturday. The 17-year-old baby-sitter called authorities to the home in the 41000 block of 15th Street in Lake Los Angeles about 1:45 p.m. Friday and told them the child had stopped breathing while in the bathtub. Investigators said they arrested the teen, whose name was not released because of his age, after finding injuries on the child's body.

"She was extremely glad to see me," said Ray East, the Walker River Indian Reservation policeman who stopped the pickup. "She's in excellent condition."

A former Kennedy family baby-sitter testified Thursday that she had no recollection of a party at which Michael Skakel allegedly made a joking reference to killing 15-year-old Martha Moxley. A prosecution witness testified earlier that Marissa Verrochi was among the friends at his home in 1997 when Skakel referred humorously to the 1975 beating death. But Verrochi, 24, said she did not recall the party.

A woman who allegedly had a sexual relationship with the late Michael Kennedy when she was 14 will likely testify in the murder trial of Kennedy's cousin Michael Skakel, lawyers said Wednesday. Neither prosecutors nor defense lawyers would say why the woman would be called to testify. Jury selection continued for a second day in the trial of Skakel, who is accused of beating Martha Moxley to death in 1975 with a golf club.

Lois Crouch Matheny Addy, 109, a retired schoolteacher and principal who baby-sat for U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) when he was a boy and always voted for him, died Monday in a nursing home in Saluda, S.C., the town where she spent her whole life. In a 1995 interview, Addy recalled taking care of a young Thurmond, whose father was a law partner with Addy's brother-in-law. "The easiest way to entertain him was riding horseback," she said. "We felt like he was our little brother."

Parents who normally find themselves scribbling last-minute instructions and emergency phone numbers for their baby-sitters can now make their lives a little easier--and their kids' lives a little safer. The Babysitter Center, a magnetized dry-erase poster, offers basic first-aid tips and space for emergency telephone numbers. The poster is free (except for postage) from the Council on Family Health, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to consumer health and safety.

A young boy and his baby-sitter were seriously injured Wednesday when the boy's dog, a pit bull-Labrador retriever mix, attacked them in the backyard of his Pacoima home, authorities said. The 3-year-old boy suffered multiple cuts, wounds and gashes to his head, face and neck, and one of the baby-sitter's arms was broken, said Jim Wells, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department. "The boy was basically mutilated," Wells said. A neighbor said the dog had never lashed out before.
