A new series of occasional posts explores all things meaty and fatty. Bacon fans probably already know Los Angeles baconista Rashida Purifoy, owner of Cast Iron Gourmet -- purveyor of small-batch bacon (including pork, duck and lamb bacon), bacon fat pimento cheese, bourbon bacon chutney, bacon jam, pork nuts (corn nuts fried in bacon fat) and Purifoy's Couch Mix (caramelized bacon, dried fruit, chocolate and nuts). Kevin Bacon has given Fox some of its best ratings news in months. Bacon's gory new serial-killer drama "The Following" slashed its way to 10.4 million total viewers in its Monday premiere, according to Nielsen. That placed "The Following" solidly among TV's highest-rated new dramas this season. NBC's post-apocalyptic "Revolution" (11.6 million for the premiere) and CBS' Sherlock Holmes update "Elementary" (13.4 million) drew somewhat larger total audiences, but Bacon's show actually tied "Elementary" among young adults.

In Fox's bloody new drama "The Following," Kevin Bacon plays one of the more oft-used characters in thriller fiction. Alcoholic and emotionally detached, his character is former FBI agent Ryan Hardy, who has never quite recovered from his dance with the devil. Once upon a time, Hardy was the lead agent on a string of grisly murders at the fictional Winslow College. When he first encountered Joe Carroll (James Purefoy), he too fell under the charismatic English professor's spell, using him as a source to help unravel the literary clues left at the crime scenes.

You never, ever, have to complain about not having something to cook again. Really. You know how seriously we have always taken our recipes at the Times Food section -- testing and re-testing to get everything right. We love them all. But some, we have to confess, we love more than others. And every year since 1985 we've collected the very best recipes in a year-end compilation ( here's this year's ). Until today, it had been hard to find many of them -- there was no room to display them on the website and many of them were hidden away in different databases.

This story has been updated. See information below. More than 150 years after his death, Edgar Allan Poe can boast a superfluous achievement: He is one degree away from Kevin Bacon. Sort of. In Fox's new psychological thriller "The Following," the 54-year-old Center of the Hollywood Universe plays a former FBI agent dispatched to track down a professor-of-literature-turned-Poe-inspired-serial-killer (James Purefoy) who has escaped from prison and recruited an army of murderous disciples via the Internet.
