Around the world, Internet users are conducting about 1.4 million searches every minute -- most of them through Google Inc., a ComScore study estimates. Yet Baidu.com Inc. is strong enough in China and NHN Corp. in South Korea to crack the global top five in ComScore Inc.'s inaugural report on worldwide search patterns. The report, based on August traffic patterns, was released last week. In the past, ComScore reported search numbers for only a few countries.

Stocks retreated from lofty heights Thursday after a major Wall Street bank lowered its estimate of sales by a highflying Chinese Internet company and a European monetary official voiced concern about inflation. The news caused traders to take profits, particularly in the technology sector, from big gains made earlier in the session after Wal-Mart Stores lifted its profit forecast.

Until two years ago, Shi Lifeng had never heard of Baidu. He didn't even know what an Internet search engine was. The only engine he cared about was under the hood of vehicles he test-drove for a living here. Now, the 28-year-old auto worker spends several hours a day in front of his broadband-connected home computer, often using Baidu to search for news, music and movies. Baidu also helps him find file-sharing sites and software to download.

EBay Inc. signed an agreement with Baidu.com Inc. that allows China's biggest search engine to run advertising on EBay's Internet site in the Asian nation. Terms were not disclosed. The two companies will begin testing Baidu's search-based advertising on EBay's China site in the first quarter of 2007, San Jose-based EBay said. EBay's partnership with Baidu will enable the online retailer to tap a Chinese search market in which ad revenue may rise to $1.

U.S. political opposition scuttled China's takeover of a major American oil company this week. But money had no problem flowing in the other direction Friday as a Chinese Internet firm made its debut on Wall Street -- and scored the biggest one-day stock surge since 2000. American investors opened their wallets for Beijing-based Internet search engine Baidu.com Inc. and drove the stock up from its initial sale price of $27 to $122.54 at the close of trading, for a 354% gain.

Yahoo China will be sued by record labels for infringing copyright laws, a group representing the companies said Monday. "We've started the process and as far as we're concerned, we're on a track to litigation," said John Kennedy, chairman of the International Federation for the Phonographic Industry. Operated by Alibaba.com Corp., which is 40% owned by Yahoo Inc., Yahoo China provides links on its website to illegally copied music on nonaffiliated sites, according to the federation.

Google Inc. invested in Chinese social network Tianya.cn. The website will run on Google technology, the Mountain View, Calif.-based company said. Google won't disclose the size of the investment. Google aims to lure people to its query functions with the sites, narrowing the gap in advertising sales with reigning Chinese search engine Baidu.

Google Inc. has started a free online music service in China, a market with almost 300 million Web users. The service allows users to download and save songs from Warner Music Group Corp., Sony Corp., Universal Music Group, Broadcast Music Inc. and 140 other independent labels, Google said Monday. Google's music offering helps it match services provided by Baidu.com Inc., which has more than double the market share of the Mountain View, Calif., company in China.
