The new La Brea Bakery is now open in the Rita Flora building at La Brea Avenue and 6th Street. The bakery has relocated from its original spot inside the erstwhile Campanile, which has been taken over by chef Walter Manzke . Re “ Junior's Deli to close at end of year ,” Dec. 27 Junior's is closing? It's like taking away something from your childhood. Junior's means more to me than a landmark in L.A.; it's filled with memories dating back two decades: my girlfriend picking up a birthday cake from the bakery; taking my dad from Brooklyn to dine in one of the booths; and even getting into an altercation with another patron over getting a table on a crowded Sunday...

One dollar. Can it buy you lunch? It seems unlikely, especially now that it costs as much as $7 for a cup of coffee at Starbucks . Unlikely -- yes. Impossible -- maybe not. Sipan Bakery in Glendale makes a respectable lahmajun , a.k.a. Armenian "pizza," smeared with ground beef, tomatoes, parsley and garlic. But it's Saipan's concoction called muhammarajun , the same dough topped with pomegranate-walnut dip muhammara before it goes into the oven, that's the unique standout.

Looks like it'll be a bake sale after all. Hostess Brands Inc. said Tuesday that mediation efforts with the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco and Grain Millers Union were unsuccessful, and that means the Twinkies maker will either liquidate or sell off its assets. The company will go before a bankruptcy judge in White Plains, N.Y., on Wednesday. The company said it will have no further comment until after the hearing. Quiz: How well do you know fast food? The failed talks will likely be devastating news to legions of Americans who stockpiled Ding Dongs and Ho Ho's after Hostess said Friday that it was shutting down - then rejoiced a few days later when the company agreed to further negotiations with the union.

KABUL, Afghanistan - Raza Gul trudges the half-mile to work through a maze of brick and mud homes, sewage streams and toddlers running naked. She's two months pregnant, and her lower back aches as she steps over ditches and eyes speeding cars. Her sister-in-law, a frail woman, shadows her. They say little. The slight wind chills Gul and she thinks about the cost of wood to heat her home and keep her four children warm. She is certain that her husband is already prowling their neighborhood hillside, hunting his first hit of opium for the day. She knows he'll walk to one of the local dealers, then sit alone in their crumbling house, roll his stash in foil and smoke.

A true (if someone misleadingly named) jazz family affair, the Clayton Brothers feature Grammy nominated pianist Gerald Clayton in an ensemble that features his father John on bass and his uncle Jeff on alto saxophone. The youngest Clayton has already established himself as an artist to watch with his 2011 album "Bond," and the agreeable swing of this ensemble's recent album "The Gathering" shows a family in utter harmony. BEIRUT - At least 20 people were killed in the Syrian city of Aleppo on Tuesday when a bakery was hit by a shell, turning the bread shop into a bloodbath, activists said. More than 50 people were injured in the attack by government forces on the Masaken Hanano neighborhood, they said, with surrounding field hospitals so overwhelmed by the influx of victims that activists sent out a plea for local doctors to come and assist. Only half of the victims could be identified. One gruesome video showed a young girl, in a turquoise shirt, whose head had been blown off. Mimi's new prototype restaurant design aims to deliver a thorough Parisian experience - the airy gardens! The bustling cafes! The romantic corners! The wine! The twist? Mimi's plans to incorporate each of these elements into a single building. In a shopping center in Santa Clarita, minutes from the Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park, hard-hatted workers are putting the finishing touches on the 34-year-old chain's so-called “revolution.” Instead of “Mimi's Cafe,” the restaurant will be known as just “Mimi's.” The new flagship, set to open next week in the shell of an older Mimi's, will expand beyond the chain's full-service background to include several themed dining spaces.
