Visitors to the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tenn., will soon be able to get a closer look at the place where civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was killed in the spring of 1968. The museum, which opened to the public in 1991, is renovating and will soon be allowing access to the balcony where King was shot while staying at the Lorraine Motel, according to the Associated Press. Until recently, museum visitors could see the balcony -- the museum is built around the two-story motel -- but they couldn't walk on it. When the new exhibit opens, visitors will be able to step onto the balcony, and there will also be a lift for disabled guests.

Re "A lesson in old-style tweeting," Opinion, Aug. 1 I enjoyed Allen Levy's Op-Ed article about the mourning doves nesting on his Culver City condo balcony. I live in the Rancho Park area, also in a condo with a balcony. This spring, mourning doves made a nest on some plastic planters I was not using. Two babies hatched, were fed and grew and flew away. The parents came back and used the nest a second time. During the time of the nesting, hatching and feeding, I often opened my sliding-glass door to look closely at the birds, which stayed despite the noise of my door and screen.

No one does pageantry like the British, whether it's an annual event (the State Opening of Parliament) or a daily one (changing the guard at Buckingham Palace.)  So, of course, the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II,  commemorating her 60 years on the throne, launched an outsize celebration in London, including a flotilla of 1,000 boats sailing on the Thames in a downpour Sunday while the London Philharmonic played and a choir on a barge floated by, lustily singing  “God Save the Queen” with rain-soaked hair plastered against their faces.   On Monday night, the queen was serenaded in concert outside Buckingham Palace by Paul McCartney and Elton John, who fittingly sang his defiant “I'm Still Standing” to the 86-year-old monarch.

Actor Pierce Brosnan has sold his Malibu beach retreat for $2.6 million. Brosnan and his wife, environmental activist and former broadcast journalist Keely Shaye Smith, put the property on the market at $3.9 million in 2010 while building another house nearby. The gated Mediterranean they sold has separate space for use as an office or media room and sits on more than a quarter of an acre with lawn space and a courtyard fountain. The flower boxes and hydrangea-lined pathways may have been a nod to Brosnan's Irish roots.
