On the morning of Nov. 21, 1980, the sound of sirens stirred Rafael Patino from bed. "Usually when you hear sirens, they come and then they go," he said. "But these were coming and staying." When he looked out the window of his 16th-floor room, he realized that the Las Vegas MGM Grand Hotel was on fire. "I woke up my wife and we got dressed to leave," said Patino, an Irvine sales executive. "But when we walked out of the room, we couldn't see anything. The hall was pitch black with smoke.

"KA," Cirque du Soleil's upcoming show at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, will open for previews Nov. 26 in the 1,951-seat theater built for it, the Cirque announced Wednesday. The combined cost of theater and production will be more than $165 million, said a Cirque spokesman. Ticket prices will range from $99 to $150. Staged by avant-garde Canadian director Robert Lepage, "KA" will be built around the theme of duality.

Hilton Bids on Bankrupt Bally's in Reno: Hilton Hotels Corp. offered to buy a Reno casino hotel resort from bankrupt Bally's Grand Inc. for $73 million, plus assumption of some debt. Hilton's offer came nine days after Bally's Grand, a subsidiary of Bally Manufacturing Corp., agreed to sell the casino to Harvey's Wagon Wheel Inc., a casino operator in Lake Tahoe, Nev., for $70 million, plus assumption of some liabilities.

Casinos to Build Monorail: Two Las Vegas casinos said they plan to build a $15-million monorail that will link both gambling complexes. The MGM Grand Hotel Casino & Theme Park, which is still under construction, and Bally's Las Vegas said they hope the mile-long monorail will reduce traffic congestion and become the first segment of a larger transit system connecting the Las Vegas Strip, downtown, convention center and airport.

The fortysomething woman wearing the sparkling black Barbra Streisand concert sweatshirt paused during her marathon assault on the quarter slots at the new MGM Grand Hotel. Standing and stretching near the massive lobby of the $1-billion hotel, casino and theme park, the woman pointed to the $1,100 jackpot total on the machine. "I'm going to keep at it until I win enough to buy a front-row ticket to Barbra's show," she said, good-naturedly.

The newest mega-hotel casino on the Strip, the $1-billion MGM Grand, fell victim Monday to the second daring daylight robbery of an armored truck in recent months. The driver of a Loomis armored truck was outside the south entrance waiting for two partners to return from inside the casino when a masked gunman entered the cab, police said. The gunman forced the driver into the back of the truck, then drove the vehicle a few blocks to a waiting car where the cash was transferred.

At least 100 people were evacuated briefly from the top three floors of Bally's Grand-Reno Hotel-Casino on Friday after the roof caught fire. The two-alarm blaze began at 5:30 p.m. and caused minor fire damage in the 27-floor, 2,001-room hotel-casino, according to Reno Fire Department Battalion Chief Paul Edgington. Edgington said that at first firefighters did not know how big the blaze was and whether the entire hotel-casino would have to be evacuated. Last year, Bally's Inc.
