Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones tweeted Sunday that a fan in San Francisco threw a banana at him in the outfield during the Orioles' 10-2 win over the Giants that afternoon. Jones is African American. As ESPN.com points out , throwing a banana in the direction of a black player is considered a racist action and has occurred in other sports such as the NHL and European hockey. Giants senior director of media relations Jim Moorehead told the Baltimore Sun on Sunday night that the team hadn't received reports of such an incident but added that stadium security cameras would be reviewed on Monday.

Travelers who fancy gooey desserts and Americana may want to add Latrobe, Pa., to their summer to-do lists. This city of fewer than 9,000 souls, about 40 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, is throwing a three-day bash to honor the banana split. Seems straightforward, right? Maybe not. Latrobe's Great American Banana Split Celebration will be Aug. 23-25 and will feature a flash mob, a 1950s-style sock hop, a banana-themed family fair, art exhibits and other fun. But it's more than an homage to an iconic concoction.

If you looked up into the sky over the 101 Freeway last weekend, you might have noticed a massive, yellow, cylindrical aircraft hovering above the traffic. The floating orb was a blimp painted in the image of a minion - the gibberish-speaking henchmen from Universal Pictures' "Despicable Me 2. " Though "Despicable Me 2" has characters voiced by Steve Carell (reformed supervillain Gru), Kristen Wiig (love interest Lucy) and Miranda Cosgrove (Gru's adopted daughter Margo), the animated movie's indisputed stars are Gru's army of minions, whose simple design, high-pitched voices and penchant for mischief have made them a favorite of audiences - and the new movie's marketers.

A replica of the Bluth's Original Frozen Banana stand in all its giant, yellow glory will finally make an appearance in the Los Angeles area today. Fans anticipating the return of "Arrested Development," which was canceled by Fox in 2006 but is coming back with a premiere May 26 on Netflix, will want to head down to 9300 Culver Boulevard (adjacent to Trader Joe's) from noon to 7 p.m. If you're looking to spot an actual cast member, Judy Greer, who plays Kitty Sanchez, is scheduled to be at the stand between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. The banana stand, which has been making the rounds on a world tour that has included London and New York, sent fans in a tizzy last week when news broke that it may not be making a stop in Newport Beach, where the stand originates in the show.
