Baron Davis

Say this, at least the uneasy truce between Mike Dunleavy and Baron Davis lasted about seven games into their first season together before breaking down. Nice to see that things are running ahead of schedule with the Clippers. This time, it isn't Davis cringing at a thick playbook. It is new Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro bluntly assessing the Davis approach to conditioning in the off-season, which surfaced again when Davis missed Monday's 97-88 loss to the Spurs because of a swollen left knee.

Paging John Lucas for an emergency point guard consultation. . . . While the faltering Baron Davis isn't the only reason the Clippers are 0-3 ? he has plenty of company on the listing ship ? his near absence in the first half Sunday against Dallas was particularly alarming. Davis didn't score until there were about six minutes left in the third quarter. That was bad enough, but was made even worse when the other starters went south fast in the Mavericks' eventual 99-83 victory at Staples Center.

This season, most assuredly, will be different for the Clippers. But how can that be said with any certainty on the eve of their NBA season opener Wednesday at Staples Center against Portland? Well, here's one difference: They won't open their season against the Lakers, the way they did the last two campaigns. Those two seasons started with a thud, with the Clippers going 0-4 last season and 0-6 in 2008-09. Not that Brandon Roy, old friend Marcus Camby and the Trail Blazers are pushovers, and, in fact, Portland has often been a problematic matchup for the Clippers.

Home again, naturally. The Clippers returned from their whirlwind adventure in Mexico, having answered some of their preseason questions with four games left before the regular-season opener. Some ? but not all. Namely, how would the knee and/or calf of point guard Baron Davis respond the morning after his first game this exhibition season. Davis said there was no trepidation getting up and taking that first step Wednesday morning. Davis played 16 minutes against the San Antonio Spurs in a 100-99 loss Tuesday night at Mexico City, recording seven assists and six points and committing one turnover.

Clippers guard Baron Davis, slowed by a sore left knee, went through his first full practice with contact Sunday and afterward rattled off answers to questions about the team's performance through three exhibition games. Then, forward Blake Griffin poked his head into the media faction, a query on his mind. "And how do you feel you've played, personally?" Griffin asked. "Uh, I haven't played at all," Davis said. "Oh yeah, that's right," Griffin said, laughing. Davis, whether because of knee or conditioning concerns, hasn't played a preseason minute, but he said there is no longer swelling in his knee and that he'll know after practice Monday whether he can play in Tuesday's game against San Antonio in Mexico City.

Now it all makes sense. One reason the Clippers got out front on the Baron Davis fitness issue became obvious Tuesday, the opening day of training camp. New Coach Vinny Del Negro opted to sit out Davis. And the point guard said afterward that he is dealing with a couple of nagging injuries, namely some swelling in a knee and a strained calf. And no, those two things did not occur on media day. "It was just happening during training," Davis said after the morning session.

In news their fans have waited their whole lives for, the Clippers changed cultures Monday. No, not that culture. Ownership remains in the, uh, experienced hands of Donald T. Sterling. This was at the player level, where, of course, the Clippers change cultures frequently . . . usually for the worse. Instead of the usual happy talk, the Clippers began their No More Mr. Nice Guy Era with new Coach Vinny Del Negro noting Baron Davis wasn't in shape to practice.

Diet guru Jenny Craig's number is not on speed dial over at Clippers headquarters. The Clippers, who will hold their first practice on Tuesday, aren't alarmed about the fitness level of Baron Davis , a onetime pitchman for Craig. You might call it measured concern. That was the newsworthy point Monday, along with valid issues of two players recovering from knee surgery ( Randy Foye and Craig Smith ) and keeping Blake Griffin from pushing too hard, too fast and not letting shooting guard Eric Gordon burn out. New Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro wasn't even five minutes into his first session with reporters at media day when he expressed concern about the shape of the veteran point guard, Davis.

Undoubtedly, one reason the Clippers found themselves pitching LeBron James and his management team on Friday afternoon in Cleveland had to do with a certain power forward from Oklahoma. Perhaps it's too early to add the words 'miracle worker' to Blake Griffin's resume. Grabbing rebounds in a regular-season NBA game will suffice. But Griffin is the X-factor in the Clippers' courtship of the coveted free-agent James. Remember when James made his way down the court and ended up in front of the Clippers bench in January at Staples Center and hugged the injured Griffin?

LAKERS-CLIPPERS TONIGHT When: 7:30. Where: Staples Center. On the air: TV: FS West, Channel 9. Radio: 710, 980, 1330. Records: Lakers 56-24, Clippers 28-53. Series: Lakers, 2-1. Update: They started the regular season playing each other Oct. 27 in a Clippers "home" game, with the Lakers winning, 99-92; and the Clippers never reached the .500 mark. The Clippers' season highlight was probably Jan. 6, when they beat the Lakers, 102-91, but a lowlight came a week later when the Lakers thumped them, 126-86.
