Your choices in San Francisco hotels are overwhelming. The prices can be too. So during our staff visit to the City by the Bay, we looked for reasonably priced hotels that had charm, location or both. We came back with 14 ideas on places to bed down. It's not a complete list, but it is eclectic, like the city itself. Mystic Hotel. This property, which opened in April, stands on a tunnel-adjacent block of Stockton Street that you'll never see on a picture postcard, yet it has style, as do the Burritt Tavern bar and restaurant downstairs.

Like Goldilocks searching for the perfect perch, Dong Yu tested one seat after another in the glitzy showroom. Some were too pricey, others too fussy. Then he found one that was just right. Keeping up with hygiene is a good idea, but watch your step. The bathroom is full of ways to hurt yourself — and a new report estimates that nearly a quarter of a million Americans age 15 or older can back that up. Bathing and showering appear to be particularly dangerous. Overall, about two-thirds of accidental injuries happen in the bathtub or shower — which makes sense, because each can become slippery. But many injuries involve the toilet: standing up, sitting down, or using it. (Yes, about 9% of the total injuries were from overexertion.)

WATERTOWN, Mass. -- An hour or two before, Deanna Finn hadn't anticipated she'd be ducking with her son in the bathroom of her Watertown home, listening to gunshots, her husband blocks away. The travel ban that had marooned area residents in their homes had just been lifted when Sean Finn decided to go out for milk and cigarettes. It had been a strange day, cooped up in their apartment at the corner of Franklin and Walnut streets in Watertown. Police had searched the yard earlier in the day, and friends' houses had taken bullet holes in another part of Watertown.

Second of two parts Phil Richards used to like his job driving a forklift in a produce and meat warehouse. He took pride in steering a case of beef with precision. Now, he says, he has to speed through the warehouse to meet quotas, tracked by bosses each step of the way. Through a headset, a voice tells him what to do and how much time he has to do it. It makes the Unified Grocers warehouse in Santa Fe Springs operate smoothly with fewer employees, but it also makes Richards' work stressful.

Know what I hate? Boat parades. I understand the allure, the fun-house reflections off the water. Pink palm trees. Blue reindeer. But boat parades don't remind me of Christmas. What boat parades remind me of is Victoria's Secret ads. Or Republican National Conventions, when they used to be down in Miami Beach. You know what we need more of? Well, everything, but you know the one holiday activity that should increase? Poker games. There's something about all that green felt. Reminds me of those funny tuxedos elves wear.
