In what may be the perfect mash-up of retro-nostalgia with modern-day reality TV mania, you can now grow a "Duck Dynasty" beard via Chia Pet. We caught a blurb about the Chia Willie and Chia Uncle Si handmade decorative planters on NBC's "Today" show Thursday morning and, since we couldn't stop chuckling about the genius pop-culture collaboration all the way to work, we decided to get some details from the folks at Chia central -- San Francisco-based Joseph...

WASHINGTON - Raised on his father's and grandfather's tales of military service in India, Amitoj Chhabra wanted nothing more than to follow in their footsteps and join the U.S. Air Force. "I dreamt it. I slept it. It was all I ever thought about 24/7," Chhabra recalled. But the dream died before he even reached boot camp. When he tried to enlist, Chhabra, a Sikh from Reno, was told that his long hair and beard, which Sikhs are religiously mandated to keep unshorn, collided with Air Force grooming requirements.

As with Wes Anderson's previous movies, there isn't a detail overlooked or a hair out of place in “The Grand Budapest Hotel” -- no mean feat given the myriad mustaches and bumper crop of beards that careen across the screen (no more than three or four of the male characters in the entire film were clean shaven). With last weekend's wider release giving more people the opportunity to check into the Grand Budapest, we checked in with makeup, hair and prosthetics designer Frances Hannon to deconstruct the whisker wizardy, walk through the sculpting of tonsorial topiaries (incuding Jeff Goldblum's epic Freudian facial fuzz)

When it comes to quirky last-minute gifts, you'd be hard pressed to find a more out-of-the-curve but so-on-trend offering than a facial hair-themed coloring book. The "Beard and Mustache Coloring Book" is the brainchild of two-time world champion beardsman Jack Passion , a man who who has managed over the last seven years to leverage a legendary face mane into a full-blown beard-based business that includes T-shirts, a how-to manual called "The Facial Hair Handbook," and a starring role on IFC's docu-comedy TV series "Whisker Wars," the second season of which started airing Nov. 23. L.A.-based Passion shared his ideas with an artist who rendered the final 22 black-and-white images that appear in the 48-page all-ages coloring book.

The beard has been validated. After a critically praised freshman season, "Homeland" scored nine Emmy nominations that resulted in six wins, including outstanding drama series actor for Damian Lewis and actress for Claire Danes. Yet, Mandy Patinkin's turn as CIA Middle East division chief Saul Berenson (and Carrie's shoulder to cry those tortured tears on) was blackballed, failing to land a nomination in the supporting actor in a drama category. What a difference a season makes.

Jennifer Lawrence and Ben Affleck are doing some post-Oscar grooming. And here we thought the nips, trims, dyes and tucks were supposed to happen before the Academy Awards. Oscars 2013: Nominee list | Red carpet | Highlights The actress was photographed smiling when leaving a Beverly Hills hair salon sporting the new 'do, which she donned for her role as Katniss Everdeen for "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," according to People.

A couple of weeks ago, David Beckham was holding forth in the Galaxy locker room after a victory over the Chicago Fire when the conversation got around to the beard he was sporting. Was it a disguise to allow him to slip into Ukraine unnoticed with the rest of England's national team? "No," Beckham said. "I just got lazy. It'll probably be gone tomorrow." Hair today, gone tomorrow? No way. By the next day, it wasn't gone. The beard accompanied Beckham to Europe for England's World Cup qualifiers against Ukraine and Belarus.

One of the most noticeable men's trends at Sunday night's 2013 Golden Globes was the abundance of facial hair, from presenter Jeremy Renner's barely there smudge of a 'stache to Bill Murray's full-walrus mustache with connected sideburns. Some of the other bearded and mustachioed men in attendance were producers Grant Heslov and Judd Apatow, actors Jason Statham and Will Ferrell and, if you include Bradley Cooper's scruffy visage, all five nominees for lead actor in a comedy or musical film, with facial fuzz gracing the grizzled chins of Ewan McGregor, Jack Black, Bill Murray and winner Hugh Jackman.

Despite it being smack in the middle of mustache-focused Movember, when it comes to social media the 'stache is getting beaten by the beard - and by more than a whisker. That's according to the data-mining folks at at Kontera , who apparently have been tracking this very thing. Brett Favre appeared on Fox's Super Bowl pregame show via satellite -- from the future! Well, actually, it was just from his home in Mississippi during the present time, but it definitely seemed like something that was being beamed to us from maybe 2030 or so. That's because of his beard -- that gloriously bushy and gray beard that made the future Hall of Famer appear to be years beyond his relatively young age of 44. I'm not ragging on...

Social media is a strange place. People share and find breaking news, reconnect with long-lost family members, make new friends, and replace movie titles with the word “beard.” Twitter has a long, rich history of replacing movie titles with objects. Past trends included “replace movie title with Pope,” “replace movie title with bacon,” and of course, “replace movie title with goat.” On Friday #ReplaceAMovieTitleWithBeard was the top trending term in the United States on Twitter.

Although 'stache-acceptance in the American workplace is high, the incidence of lip spinach gets pencil thin as you climb the corporate ladder. Those are among the key takeaways of the American Mustache Institute's recently completed Wahl-sponsored  Workplace Mustache Study. Of the 1,109 people who completed the institute's online opinion survey, 91.7% of respondents agreed with the statement: "I believe mustaches are appropriate for the workplace. " In addition, 75.27% think their workplace "benefits from the contributions of Mustached Americans"; 68.05% think "Mustached Americans are strong managers and business leaders"; and 81.75% of respondents picked "works hard" as a workplace behavior they associate with "people of Mustached American descent.

Brian Wilson is my new hero. Not you? Still having trouble divorcing him from his time with the evil black and orange? Might want to be a tad open-minded here. My favorite story to come out of the general mangers' meetings last week had nothing to do with replay or the Masahiro Tanaka machinations, but Wilson's beard. He won't shave it off to be a Yankee. Is this great or what? The Yankees need bullpen help, and Wilson came back from elbow surgery to sign with the Dodgers and allow one earned run in 18 appearances.

World Series MVP David Ortiz needed encouragement to keep from shaving his beard this season. Boston Red Sox teammate Shane Victorino struggled just to grow his. Neither of them had a problem with ridding themselves of the facial hair Monday during a charity event to benefit victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. The so-called shave-off was sponsored by Gillette, which donated $100,000 to the One Fund. Bushy beards became a signature look for the champs this year after outfielder Jonny Gomes and first baseman Mike Napoli encouraged the rest of the team to stop shaving during spring training and throughout the season.

EL PASO - A military hearing leading up to the murder trial of Maj. Nidal Hasan, the Army psychiatrist charged in the Fort Hood shooting rampage , was delayed  Friday after Hasan showed up in court with a beard. Col. Gregory Gross, the trial judge, said Hasan's facial hair - captured by a sketch artist during his appearance Friday at the Texas base's Lawrence J. Williams Judicial Center - violated Army regulations and “was a disruption to the court proceedings,” according to a statement released Friday by Fort Hood public affairs.

Trust science on this: Guys are generally not eager to mate with a high-testosterone bearded lady.   But what goes on with other animals that share “male” ornamentation? Do the females pay a heavy price for aping the decoration of their sexual counterparts? If so, why would that trait survive? Renowned Chicago chef Charlie Trotter, an inspirational and notoriously mercurial figure whose eponymous restaurant became an international destination and who pioneered a bold, distinctly American form of haute cuisine, has died. He was 54. Rescue crews called to Trotter's apartment in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago on Tuesday morning found him unresponsive. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A Cook County medical examiner's spokesman said Trotter's death did not appear suspicious and indicated that he had a history of seizures and strokes.
