At first glance, Patricia Arthur seems the picture of health. In a crowd of women, she stands out in her striking purple turban and the dramatic lavender eye shadow that accents her almond-shaped brown eyes. Only after she tells you she's a cancer patient do you notice the effects of chemotherapy: Fine pencil marks fill in where her eyebrows used to be, eye liner gives the illusion of lashes, blush colors a pale complexion and the turban hides her hair loss.

Eva Haulsman, 80, has found friends here. "We talk about wherever you're going or whatever you're doing. Sometimes we get a little bit close. It's a form of therapy," she said one recent day. Margaret Ward, 62, has been coming here since 1962, when the place was called Bartmore Beauty College. The reason for her loyalty, she says slyly through a Scottish burr, is "the price is right. "The kids aren't as trendy as they used to be," said Rory LaBahn, a stylist at Headlines Hair Studio in El Toro. "If one person has it, they all don't get it. They're more individual now, but they won't go totally out of that realm of acceptability."
