Christian was on his way, someone promised. He forgot something, another publicist whispered. The event, a small dinner hosted by Full Picture Productions for "Project Runway" winner Christian Siriano, had started almost an hour ago, and many guests were wondering if the designer had gone diva. A situation not yet "fierce," but hardly a "hot mess." "Ugly Betty" star Becki Newton wasn't budging until he showed. "The Goodwin Games" is family comedy debuting as a late midseason replacement with only a seven-episode order. So even at Fox, a network not known for hit comedies, hopes are not high. On the other hand, there is a lot of talk these days of rethinking the old models of American television, including making the standard network season (22 to 24 episodes) more like the cable model of 10 to 12. AT LAST year's somber Emmys, the red carpet looked more like an Irish wake than an award show, with a sea of black sheaths on parade. But this year -- with no looming strike to dampen spirits -- actresses dressed like brides on their second marriages, determined to eclipse their prior vows. Thankfully, though a few trends emerged, none dominated completely. Save for bare clavicles.

THE fun of the Globes room is the mix of television and film stars and other power people, jammed into a room where there is nothing barring anyone from walking up to anyone they want. There was Harvey Weinstein chatting with a bubbly Gillian Anderson (and, later, standing in a crowd saying, "Hey, who's grabbing my rear?"); Steven Spielberg dashing past Tony Shalhoub; Kiefer Sutherland watching Dustin Hoffman greet old friends.
