Diana Taurasi scored 30 points and keyed a tiebreaking run in the fourth quarter to help the Phoenix Mercury advance to the Western Conference finals with a 100-92 victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars in Game 3 of their opening-round series Monday night. The top-seeded Mercury will open the conference finals against the Sparks at Pauley Pavilion on Wednesday night. Becky Hammon led the Silver Stars with 29 points, and Vickie Johnson had 24 points, including four three-pointers, and six rebounds.

Sheryl Swoopes scored 20 points and Tynesha Lewis had a career-high 12, and the Houston Comets defeated Phoenix, 61-56, Wednesday night at Houston in the Mercury's season-opener. Swoopes was eight for 16 from the field, though the Comets shot only 38%. "Our shots are not falling right now. My shot is not falling right now, but I think we're close to getting to where we want to be," said Swoopes, who sat out last season because of a knee injury.

SAN ANTONIO -- Shana Crossley came off the bench to lead San Antonio for the second consecutive game in scoring with 26 points as the Silver Stars clinched their first playoff berth since moving to Texas with an 86-67 victory Saturday over the Sparks. The franchise's last appearance in the postseason was 2002 as the Utah Starzz. Sophia Young had 22 points for San Antonio (17-10). Marie Ferdinand-Harris scored 11 and had nine rebounds, and Ruth Riley scored 10.
