The New York Liberty's 19-0 first-half run at Madison Square Garden set the tone for a 51-45 victory Sunday that forced a third game in its best-of-three Eastern Conference finals against the Cleveland Rockers. But a strong second half gave the Rockers hope for tonight's deciding game at the Garden, where the Liberty is riding a streak of 12 consecutive victories.

Tina Thompson scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Western Conference-leading Houston Comets to an 83-66 victory over the Utah Starzz on Friday night before 6,916 at Salt Lake City. Cynthia Cooper added 19 points and Sheryl Swoopes 14 for Houston, which beat Utah for the 14th time in 15 meetings. Natalie Williams returned for Utah after missing three games because of a lower back strain and finished with nine points and eight rebounds. She was two for 12 from the field in 35 minutes.

The New York Liberty's winning streak ended at six games with a 72-68 loss to Indiana in front of 10,510 Friday night at Madison Square Garden. The Fever (4-3), responsible for both Liberty (6-2) losses, trailed by 13 points early in the second half. Indiana's Tamika Catchings scored four of her 17 points in the last 14 seconds.Becky Hammon had 22 points to lead the Liberty, who lost for the first time since dropping the season opener at Indiana -- 69-67 on May 21.

LaToya Thomas had 14 points and Shannon Johnson 13 points and 10 assists for the Silver Stars (5-9). Penny Taylor had 25 points for Phoenix (6-6), and Diana Taurasi added 17. New York 67, Seattle 62 -- Becky Hammon scored 15 points in Spokane, Wash., to help the Liberty end a franchise-record six-game losing streak.

Anna DeForge had nine of her career-high 26 points in a 23-7 second-half run, and the Mercury won, 72-60, Thursday night at Phoenix to hand the New York Liberty a franchise-record sixth consecutive loss. DeForge had 21 points in the second half for Phoenix, which overcame a 20-4 deficit. Diana Taurasi had 20 points for the Mercury, which scored the first nine points of the second half and led by as many as 14.

The Charlotte Sting nearly blew a 15-point lead in the final 4 1/2 minutes, but Andrea Stinson's two free throws with 1.5 seconds remaining helped secure a 70-67 victory over the Detroit Shock on Saturday night in front of 8,435 at Auburn Hills, Mich. Teana McKiver scored 15 points and fellow reserve Kelly Miller added 12 for the Sting. Charlotte's reserves outscored Detroit's, 35-2. The Shock was playing its season opener. The Sting (2-1) led, 64-59, with 4:30 left before the Shock rallied.
