The best Hollywood careers are unpredictable. No one in, say, the 1970s would have expected a prolific young director named Terrence Malick to disappear for 20 years and then come back with a meditative meisterwerk . Or imagined sitcom star John Travolta blowing up, then fading, then being redeemed by a hotshot former video-store clerk. By this standard, Ben Affleck's career is strange - but perhaps no more strange than some of our other shape-shifting talents. Affleck began as a wunderkind writer-actor - watch his "Good Will Hunting" acceptance speech now and you'll be struck by just how young and jolting to the system he and Matt Damon were - then in just a few years descended into laughable "Gigli"-esque roles and, thanks to his other J.Lo affiliation, the grinding machinery of the tabloids.

Ben Affleck was named outstanding director for "Argo" at the 65th Annual Directors Guild of America Awards, which were held Saturday night at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland. The win solidifies "Argo" as an Oscar frontrunner, after the film also claimed key honors from the Screen Actors and Producers guilds last weekend. "I don't think this makes me a real director, but I think it means I'm on my way," Affleck said in a speech. The other nominees for the feature directing award were Kathryn Bigelow for "Zero Dark Thirty," Tom Hooper for "Les Miserables," Ang Lee for "Life of Pi" and Steven Spielberg for "Lincoln.

Jennifer Lawrence and Ben Affleck are doing some post-Oscar grooming. And here we thought the nips, trims, dyes and tucks were supposed to happen before the Academy Awards. Lawrence, 22, took home the lead actress Oscar for her role as a neurotic widow in "Silver Linings Playbook" on Sunday night and was spotted Monday without her blond locks when she emerged as a brunet. In a surprise defeat for Steven Spielberg and "Lincoln," Ben Affleck won the Golden Globe for directing "Argo. " A clearly stunned Affleck, who earlier this week was noticeably not shortlisted for the directing Oscar, said he didn't care what the award was -- he was honored to have been nominated alongside the "exceptional talents" of Spielberg, Ang Lee ("Life of Pi"), Quentin Tarantino ("Django Unchained"), Tom Hooper ("Les Miserables") and Kathryn Bigelow ("Zero Dark Thirty").

The atmosphere at John Green's panel was sort of like a high school classroom. And Green was the coolest kid on campus. The skinny, nerdy-looking author with glasses was treated like a rock star during his panel at the L.A. Times Festival of Books on Saturday, with the crowd - some of whom had waited in line since 9 a.m. for a 12:30 p.m. session - giving him a roaring ovation when he walked onstage. He delighted his audience, which ranged from teenagers to gray-haired baby boomers, in speaking about the autobiographical nature of some of his books, his love of romance novels, his beef with the Internet, and a concept he created in which people who identify as “nerdfighters” team up to spread positivity throughout the world.

Mindy Kaling has seen a lot of action on "The Mindy Project," given her character's very busy love life.  The star, writer and producer of the Fox comedy, which was renewed for a third season  this month, has smooched countless guest stars as Dr. Mindy Lahiri, a boy-crazy clotheshorse (think: a much more accomplished, New York version of her "Office" counterpart, Kelly Kapoor, who is still a total hot mess). In character, Kaling has been involved with James Franco, Ed Helms, Bill Heder, Seth Meyers and Seth Rogen, among others, and on Thursday, "Today" show host Savannah Guthrie asked her if she had a list of Hollywood guys she wanted to guest star so that she could lock lips with them.

With Oscar nominating ballots out to Academy members and the deluge of top-10 lists perhaps on the downward slope, there's no time like now to start thinking about potential awards movies for next year. San Franciscans weren't the only ones touched by "Batkid" Miles Scott's adventures Friday - Caped Crusaders Christian Bale and Ben Affleck applauded the 5-year-old hero as well. “Batkid. Best Batman ever,” Affleck, who will don the cape in the upcoming “Man of Steel” sequel, tweeted Saturday . "Wasn't that fantastic?” Bale told Vulture . “This little kid, oh my God - what a wonderful day for the little fella! It's just fantastic, seeing all those people who were out there to support it. Only one word describes the effect of watching Ben Affleck slowly dial down the temperature one degree at a time in "Runner Runner": Cool. Frank Sinatra cool. He stars as sociopathic online gambling mogul Ivan Block, and if that role doesn't sound cool, you haven't seen Affleck at the controls. Justin Timberlake costars as Richie Furst, a Princeton whiz kid, also cool. Not as cool as Block. Nor as keen on the whole sociopathic lifestyle. The money's great, but feeding enemies to the crocodiles crosses some lines.

Meme culture strikes again. In a confluence of two topics hot (with ironic italics) on the Internet right now, model Emily Ratajkowski, most recently seen undressed and dancing in Robin Thicke's controversial "Blurred Lines" music video, has been cast in a role in the anticipated adaptation of the novel "Gone Girl. " Director David Fincher is bringing together an increasingly odd collection of talent for his telling of the tale by Gillian Flynn, who is adapting her own novel for the screen.

As the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind "Argo," Ben Affleck certainly knows the difference between a good spy story and a bad one. Part of his education came from novelist Tom Clancy, who died Tuesday in a Baltimore hospital. The bestselling author of espionage tales was 66. As a young actor, Affleck was cast in the 2002 film adaptation of "The Sum of All Fears," in which Affleck played Clancy's famous CIA operative Jack Ryan.  PHOTOS: Tom Clancy: 1947-2013 “I think Tom was really the first major writer in the genre to make realism the top priority," Affleck said Tuesday.

Ben Affleck learned the hard way that it's never a good idea to read Internet comments.  The actor, who set off a furious fanboy backlash when he was cast as Batman in the upcoming "Man of Steel" sequel last month, responded to his haters during a visit Monday to "Late Night. " Affleck told host Jimmy Fallon that even he was skeptical when he was first approached about the role. "They called me up and said, 'Do you want to do this?' And I thought, 'Well, I'm not 25, man.
