"Billy Elliot," "The Contender," "Chocolat," "Gladiator" and "Almost Famous" each received three nominations for Screen Actors Guild Awards, the organization announced Tuesday. The nominations reflect a film awards season that remains wide open. SAG's awards frequently are indicative of the sentiments of Oscar voters, of which actors represent a significant block. "Ally McBeal," "Will & Grace," "ER," "Frasier" and "The Sopranos" are among the TV series with multiple nominations.

In "Excess Baggage," a lonely heiress on the edge (Alicia Silverstone) stages her own kidnapping to get her father's attention but instead attracts a sweet-natured car thief (Benicio Del Toro) who steals her car while she's hiding inside. (Rated PG-13) So what if mainstream movie critics panned nearly everything about this movie, from the acting to the concept? They undoubtedly are--how shall we say?--already on the far side of the hill from most of the audience.

Steven Soderbergh's complex drug thriller, "Traffic," was chosen best picture of the year Wednesday by the New York Film Critics Circle. "Traffic" received three major awards from the 34-member critics group. Soderbergh won best director for the ensemble film, as well as for his direction of the spring box-office hit "Erin Brockovich." Benicio Del Toro took home best supporting actor honors for his performance in "Traffic" as a Mexican cop who becomes embroiled in drug wars.
