As the Federal Reserve weighs an imminent cut in its extraordinary economic stimulus, many outside the United States are pleading with the Fed: "Would you consider the impact on us too?" That essentially was the message Friday from the head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde. WASHINGTON -- As the Federal Reserve weighs an imminent cut in its extraordinary economic stimulus, many outside the United States are pleading with the Fed, “Would you consider the impact on us too?” That essentially was the message Friday from the head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde. Speaking at an opening luncheon of the Fed's summer conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo., Lagarde turned the spotlight on what has emerged as the main global economic issue of the day: the bold actions of central banks and, as she put it, how these policies “in one corner of the world can reach all corners.” While the IMF's managing director spoke generally about central banks, it was clear that she was focused on the Fed and the widespread expectation - some would say fears - that next month it will start scaling back a massive bond-buying program that has helped hold down long-term interest rates and, until recently, kept emerging markets flush with cheap money.

WASHINGTON -- Top Federal Reserve officials, viewing the economic outlook with a little more caution than before, remain divided on when to reduce their bond-buying stimulus. Minutes of the Fed's last policy meeting at the end of July reveal that officials of the central bank still have not reached a consensus on the appropriate timing of tapering their $85-billion monthly purchases of Treasury and mortgage-backed securities -- despite analysts' expectations that the first cut will come in September.

WASHINGTON -- The Federal Reserve could start reducing its bond-buying program next month, but won't raise its near-zero short-term interest rate until at least 2016 -- a year later than current central bank projections suggest, Pimco Chief Executive Mohamed El-Erian said Wednesday. Speaking at a Washington panel on the economy, El-Erian predicted that policymakers would try to make more use of the Fed's forward guidance to try to offset the recent rise in long-term interest rates.  Those rates have risen because investors have been anticipating the central bank decision to start tapering its $85 billion in monthly bond purchases.

WASHINGTON - President Obama praised Lawrence H. Summers and Janet L. Yellen as "highly qualified" to be the next Federal Reserve chief, but said he had a "range of outstanding candidates" and reiterated that he would not make a decision until the fall. In a news conference Friday, Obama also suggested that his recent defense of Summers, a former Treasury secretary and his onetime chief economic advisor, should not be construed as Summers somehow having an inside track on the job. Yellen is the Fed's current vice chair.

WASHINGTON -- The heated public debate over who should be the next head of the Federal Reserve risks hurting the nation's economy and President Obama should make a decision soon to end the "circus-like atmosphere," said Pimco chief executive Mohamed El-Erian. The speculation around who would succeed Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke, whose term expires in January, started as an "insightful and important debate," El-Erian wrote in an opinion article Monday in the Washington Post. Speculation centered on the Fed's "talented" Vice Chair Janet L. Yellen and former Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers, "a brilliant economist," El-Erian said.

NEW YORK - The federal government's monthly bombshell landed with a thud on Wall Street. Stocks barely budged after the Labor Department reported the U.S. added only 162,000 jobs last month, fewer than economists had predicted but still a sign the economy is improving, however sluggishly. "It certainly wasn't a blowout number, but it's progress," said Andy Brooks, head equity trader at T. Rowe Price. Major U.S. indexes edged higher but endured no large swings as is typical when the government releases its all-important jobs report at the beginning of each month.

WASHINGTON - Improving economic data is making the prospects more likely that the Federal Reserve will start tapering its massive bond buying next month, a move that suggests the recovery is on solid ground but that would be likely to roil Wall Street. Economic growth unexpectedly picked up in the second quarter, though it still remained relatively weak. Corporate earnings are largely stronger. Consumer confidence is back to pre-recession levels. And revisions of decades of data now show that the Great Recession wasn't quite as bad as previously thought and the recovery since 2009 has been a tad stronger.

WASHINGTON - In an era of unprecedented efforts by the Federal Reserve to bolster the economy, add another first - a highly public campaign to influence the selection of the central bank's next chief. Supporters of Fed Vice Chair Janet L. Yellen have been outspoken recently in boosting her candidacy to replace Chairman Ben S. Bernanke, whose second four-year term expires in January. About a third of the Senate's 53 Democrats signed a letter urging President Obama to appoint the former UC Berkeley economist and onetime president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco to the job. Lawmakers such as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco)
