For Better Living Inc., a diversified company with interests in concrete, plastics, publishing and oil and gas exploration, reported a fourth-quarter loss of $407,000 but said its profits for the entire year jumped 324%, largely due to a sale of property. The loss for the quarter ended Dec. 29 compared to a $170,000 loss in the like period of 1983. The San Juan Capistrano company said its earnings normally suffer from a slowdown in construction during the winter months.

For Better Living Inc. said that it had net earnings of $2.3 million for its fiscal 1986, compared to profits of $43,000 the year before. Sales for the fiscal year, which ended Dec. 27, were $70.1 million, up 49% from $47.1 million. For its fourth quarter, the company earned $787,000, contrasted with a $751,000 loss in the same period the previous year. Sales of $20 million were up 60% from $12.5 million in the final period of the company's fiscal 1985.

For Better Living Inc. of San Juan Capistrano reported net income of $709,000 for the second quarter ended June 27, up 24% from $570,000 in that period last year. Sales for the period were $19.6 million, an 18% increase from $16.5 million last year. For the first half of the year, total profits came to $902,000, up 18% from $766,000 last year. For Better Living Inc. said Thursday that it will purchase the site of its Quikset/Associated Concrete plant in Santa Ana for $3.8 million through escrow. The company said it will continue to make precast concrete products at the site, and will evaluate potential uses for any land surplus. For Better Living publishes magazines and makes precast concrete and plastic building products.
