The movement that crushed cigarette smoking has also almost retired the roles of two items of automotive equipment: The ashtray and the cigarette lighter. "We have been putting ashtrays on cars since the '30s and there are still enough smokers out there to justify continuing," noted Bob Harnar, a California spokesman for Ford. "But in most ashtrays these days, you'll find loose change, gum wrappers, paper clips, air fresheners, bubble gum, toothpicks, pins, fuses and tokens.

Gateway Videotex said it will expand its service into Los Angeles County by the end of the year and estimated there are about 160,000 personal computer users there who could utilize the Santa Ana-based company's services. Gateway provides users with electronic access to numerous data bases, including news, stock prices, games and an encyclopedia. Last year, Security Pacific Bank began a home banking service using the system. Separately, the unit of Times Mirror Co.

The stars of the 1955 classic movie "Rebel Without a Cause" were James Dean, Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo, Jim Backus, Dennis Hopper, Nick Adams--and a 1949 Mercury Sport Sedan driven by Dean. That Merc returns to Southern California Sunday after an absence of 35 years--this time as the silent star of the Beverly Hills Charity Car Show. It will play alongside American classics and European exotics once owned or driven by Tony Curtis, Clark Gable, Steve McQueen and Delores Del Rio.

Computer navigational systems for cars have been available for several years, but they are separate screens in boxes--like visual Thomas Guides--that attach to the dashboard. This spring Acura will introduce the first in-dash system on its new luxury sedan, the Acura RL. It will be available only in California this year but is expected to be on line for the East Coast in 1997.

Just in time for ski season is the new Magnetic Ski Rack. The rack, which uses two flat, flexible magnets to secure it to the roof or trunk of your car, holds two pairs of skis and comes with an anti-theft, plastic-coated steel cable for the skis. The two black magnetic discs grip the metal surface of your car and, unlike suction cups, don't break their grip if you pull on the ski rack.

Golden State Minority Foundation's "Salute to Minority Education" gala at the Regent Beverly Wilshire has raised more than $150,000 to date. Honoree Dr. Jewel Plummer Cobb, president emeritus of Cal State Fullerton, delivered the keynote address. KCBS-TV weatherman Steve Rambo was emcee at the June 2 benefit. Proceeds will provide scholarships for students and grants to educational programs.
