An intriguing domino effect that some Cal State Northridge officials privately say could eventually result in the Matadors becoming a full member of the Big West Conference began Wednesday with Nevada being accepted into the Western Athletic Conference. Nevada will leave the Big West for the WAC on July 1, 2000. The Big West will be left with 11 full members--including six that play Division I-A football. Northridge is an associate member playing only softball in the Big West.

Cal State Northridge will join the Big West Conference for baseball in 2001, conference officials announced Thursday, possibly the first step in Northridge becoming a full member of the conference. Northridge will remain in the Big Sky Conference in most other sports, including football and basketball. Northridge's softball team has played in the Big West for three seasons. The Big Sky doesn't play baseball or softball. The Big West is being reshaped after the defections of four schools.

Hapless Bowl '90 is over, and we have a loser. It wasn't even close--Cal State Fullerton under New Mexico State, 9-43, snapping the Aggies' amazing streak of consecutive losses at 27 and leaving the Titans all alone atop the Division I-A football rankings, assuming you're looking at them standing on your head. They're No. 106. Out of deference to Gene Murphy, we'll cut the one-liners there. Murphy is a good coach who deserves much, much better.
