The hunt for a new UCLA football coach was down to two men on Saturday morning. But by Saturday afternoon one of those men, Kansas State Coach Bill Snyder, dropped out of the running. And the other, Northwestern Coach Gary Barnett, has asked for more time. UCLA officials have made it clear to Barnett that he would be their top choice.

Coaches Rick Neuheisel and Bill Snyder both want to win tonight's Holiday Bowl game. But the similarities end there. This is a game of opportunity for Neuheisel, in his first year with unranked Washington. A victory over seventh-ranked Kansas State gives the Huskies some national attention in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year. Snyder, meanwhile, carries a chip on his shoulder into the game.

Break out the chips and cold drinks, but let Chris Dufresne handle the remote. The Times' national college football writer handicaps what's worth watching, and skipping, on Saturday's menu of games: MORNING No. 13 Michigan State (9-1) at Northwestern (4-6) 9 a.m., ESPN First place meets last place in the Big Ten Legends Division in this story of programs going in opposite directions. Michigan State has won six straight on its way to an inevitable, league-title collision against Ohio State.

Kansas State football Coach Bill Snyder doesn't talk to reporters often, and when he does he chooses his words carefully. But even the tight-lipped Snyder can't keep a lid on his interest in the vacant UCLA job. "I won't ever pursue a job or an interview, but if UCLA calls, certainly I will listen," said Snyder, believed to be one of the strongest of several candidates UCLA Athletic Director Peter Dalis is considering to replace retired Terry Donahue.

Unbuckling the mailbag: Question: College football? Beyond the drunken student body, booze-fueled alumni, gambling junkies and the entire demented state of Texas, who cares? Not this baseball fan. As for college and pro football … I can't work up any enthusiasm for a game that routinely concusses the brains of so many players to a spongy mush, reducing these once-vibrant human beings to drooling hulks by late middle age. I don't think I'll stand and cheer for that.

Meet Kansas State and Coach Bill Snyder, a.k.a. "the Wizard of Ooze. " Nothing happens fast in Manhattan (Kan.), where folks gather at Take-Your-Time Square. The school needed most of the 20th Century to become representative in football and, if you really get down to it, Snyder looks more like a tortoise than a hare. Kansas State was trailing last year's home opener to Eastern Kentucky until quarterback Collin Klein's touchdown pass with 1 minute 39 seconds left salvaged a 10-7 win. "We were fortunate to walk away with a victory," Snyder recently recalled.
