Jeff Clayton made a name for himself by mimicking others as a redshirt on the Orange Coast football team last season. This season, he got to play and turned out to be better than expected. Clayton rushed for 1,202 yards this season, the second best single-season total in OCC history. He had 100 or more yards an OCC-record seven times and scored 13 touchdowns.

Four UC Irvine water polo players and one Anteater volleyball player were named to the U.S. team for the World University Games, Aug. 23-30 in Palermo, Italy. Omar Amr, Ryan Bailey, Dan Klatt and Craig Watson were named to the water polo team. Amr and Bailey were second-team All-Americans last season. Chris Harger, who was named to the volleyball team, also was a second-team All-American last season. * Former NBA players will be featured in an exhibition game against Athletes in Action at 7 p.m.

Despite losing its leading rusher, Orange Coast College cruised to a 34-7 victory over San Diego Mesa in a Mission Conference football game Saturday at OCC. Quarterback Greg Angelovic completed 16 of 23 passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Pirates (4-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play). But the afternoon started disastrously for running back Mike Vaez and OCC. Vaez ran 15 yards on OCC's first play, but a helmet hit his right knee as he was tackled.

Tom Meiss of Orange High School and Dave White of Edison have been named coaches for the 31st Orange County All-Star football game, which is scheduled July 6 at Orange Coast College. Meiss, a walk-on coach who led Orange (10-3-1) into the Division VIII championship game, will coach the North team. In his first season at Orange, Meiss put the Panthers into a championship football game for the first time in 60 years.

Los Angeles Harbor, which had a promising season hindered by injuries to its best two running backs, recovered to end on a positive note Saturday. The Seahawks beat Orange Coast, 9-3, in the K-Swiss Classic Saturday at Los Angeles Harbor. L.A. Harbor (8-3) scored on its first two possessions, then relied on a determined defense that limited OCC to minus-one yard in total offense in the first half, and 131 yards in the game.

Orange Coast College running backs William League and Chet Walker have committed to play football at four-year colleges, Pirate Coach Bill Workman announced. League will attend Eastern Washington. He set an OCC record with a 91-yard touchdown run last season. Walker has chosen to play at Sacramento State. He missed five games last season because of a separated shoulder but led the Pirates in scoring with seven touchdowns.

Freshman safety Bill Craft intercepted a pass and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown Saturday to help lead Orange Coast College to a 24-14 upset over San Diego Mesa in Mission Conference play in Costa Mesa's LeBard Stadium. Craft's interception came with 4:04 left in the first half and OCC leading, 14-0.
