"Mike & Molly," which premieres Monday on CBS, is a situation comedy about fat people in love, or will be, as soon as the leads have the time to get together. Fat people. In love. This is the Big Idea that animates this show, which under that padding plays most profitably as a simple, sweet romance between a pair of shy Chicagoans. Billy Gardell plays police officer Mike, Melissa McCarthy fourth-grade teacher Molly and, as is the custom in these things, they come packing comic foils: his mouthy friend and partner (Reno Wilson)

At a recent studio taping for the new CBS sitcom "Mike & Molly," a bald, slightly built man with a fringe of white hair prowled behind the cameras, listening intently, every so often hollering out to the actors as they performed a scene. If a line reading was flubbed, he was on it before the last word had left the actor's mouth. "I'm not hearing it!" he cried. "Do it again, from the top. " And later: "Louder, louder!" CBS has a lot riding on James Burrows and his finely tuned ears.

The next two Saturdays will determine who will become the newest headliner at the Riviera Comedy Club . In recent weeks, the hotel has been auditioning comics from around the country in a contest with a prize worthy of a TV talent show: a gig on the Las Vegas Strip. A total of 226 people from across the country submitted videos of their funniest material, from which 16 people were chosen to compete live on stage. The last of four finalists will be selected during a show that begins at  10 p.m. Saturday.
