Accord Ends Miners Strike: The United Mine Workers and the nation's largest coal mine operators reached a contract agreement, ending the union's six-month strike, said a spokeswoman for Sen. John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV (D-W.Va.). Marisa Spatafore said U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich told Rockefeller that the strike against the Bituminous Coal Operators Assn. has been settled. The contract covers 60,000 miners in Appalachia and the Midwest.
