Some California table grapes have been pulled from two Northeastern supermarket chains after the discovery by workers and a customer of several black widow spiders. Stop & Shop, based in Braintree, Mass., said Tuesday that as many as seven of the poisonous spiders had been found in table grapes from two suppliers in Southern California. The company said all grapes from the two distributors have been removed from its 117 stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York.

I realize there's supposedly no such thing in TV as "an original idea" but I think the writers on (CBS') "Jake and The Fatman" are carrying things a bit too far. Did they think the audience wouldn't notice that the season opener (Sept. 12) was a take-off on the Lyle and Erik Menendez brothers' murder case? And the second episode was a blatant rip-off of the Debra Winger movie "Black Widow," also set in Hawaii. What's next guys . . . "Presumed Innocent," "Jagged Edge?" Linda Harris, Los Angeles

A day in the life of a heat wave: Wednesday, June 27, Los Angeles. The city swelters. By 7 a.m., the temperature is already 94 degrees. A soft wind blows, and the high tips of our oak trees swirl like twigs in a whirlpool. Those of us who dwell in canyons recognize the deadly eddies. It'll be a long day. An edgy stillness lies over the neighborhood, simmering in the relentless heat of morning. Anxiety is a haunting presence. Past fires sear into the memory.

A federal appeals court Saturday indefinitely stayed the "Black Widow" killer's scheduled execution to hear arguments that Florida's electric chair is faulty and cruel. The decision by a three-judge panel of the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta means that Judi Buenoano, 47, will outlive her death warrant, which expires at noon Monday.

The "Black Widow" killer won a temporary stay of execution from a federal judge Thursday, just four hours before she was to go to the electric chair for poisoning her husband. U.S. District Judge Patricia Fawsett blocked the scheduled 12:01 p.m. execution of Judi Buenoano at Florida State Prison in order to hear arguments on whether the state's electric chair can malfunction and cruelly torture a prisoner. The defense contends it can, citing the state's botched execution May 4 of Jesse Tafero.

Judi Buenoano, known as "the black widow" for killing the men closest to her, was granted a 24-hour reprieve today a few hours before she was to have been executed in the electric chair. A federal judge in Orlando issued the 24-hour stay shortly after 8 a.m. Buenoano had been scheduled to die at 12:01 p.m. Buenoano's lawyers had claimed a malfunctioning electric chair could subject her to cruel and unusual punishment. The Florida Supreme Court rejected the claim .

This takes the cake! I read the article "Little Is Heard but a Frustrated Cry for Finality" (Op-Ed Page, March 25), figuring this was the usual Times ultra-liberal Pablum dose of the day. Then find the author, Joseph M. Giarratano, is presently on death row having been tried, convicted and sentenced for murder. Come on now Times, you can do better than that for your readers! If you'll print the words of a man convicted and sentenced for murdering folks, how about a little information on his victim(s)

Health officials warned Saturday that the recent weather could mean deadly black widow spiders will be around in sufficient numbers in the San Joaquin Valley to make life miserable. They said last winter's freezing temperatures should have killed off enough of the spiders to give valley residents a break this summer. However, the cold winter was followed by an early hot spell that helped a new generation of black widows mature earlier than normal.

While we're in that yearly lull before the awards storm, it's a great time for role gathering: collecting interesting performances in large parts or small, from odd or less-than-perfect movies. "Black Widow" is an ideal starting place. Not a perfect film, but so perfectly cast and fitted out and so beguiling-looking that you are tempted to overlook plot holes until they prove absolutely cavernous.
