When Bloomingdale's opens in Newport Beach on Nov. 16, shoppers familiar with the famous retailer will discover that, like many East Coast transplants, Bloomie's has changed its look to fit Orange County's lifestyle. To be sure, the new store in Fashion Island, along with three other Bloomingdale's opening in California next month, will have many of the same features that have made the 59th Street store in New York City as much of a tourist attraction as the Statue of Liberty.

In the end, multibillionaire Donald Bren got his badly needed jewel--a Bloomingdale's store tailor-made for upscale shoppers at his Fashion Island Newport Beach. Federated Department Stores ended nearly two years of intense speculation Wednesday by selecting the open-air Fashion Island Newport Beach shopping center as home for Orange County's only Bloomingdale's department store. The decision was seen as a coup for the Irvine Co.'s shopping center and a bitter defeat for the Segerstrom family's South Coast Plaza, Federated's first choice for the premiere Bloomingdale's location in Orange County.
