Energy Commission Orders 100 Natural Gas School Buses: Part of a $100-million program to replace older California school buses with clean-burning vehicles, the buses will be delivered to the California Energy Commission by fall, 1992. Blue Bird Body Co. of Atlanta will build the bus, which will be powered by a turbocharged engine burning compressed natural gas, developed by Tecogen Inc. of Waltham, Mass.

Three Girl Scouts injured in a Palm Springs bus crash have filed lawsuits against the vehicle's operator and manufacturer, blaming design defects, improper maintenance, inadequate driver training and a host of other factors for the wreck that killed seven. A fourth lawsuit was filed by Arthur Schaeffer, the husband of a Girl Scout adviser who was thrown through a window of the bus and killed instantly in the July 31 crash.

It was a tragedy almost beyond endurance: Twenty-one children drowning when their school bus was knocked into the murky waters of a flooded gravel pit. The four years that have passed may have partially healed some of the wounds, but the money--the millions of settlement dollars paid to the parents of these children--has opened new ones.
