It is heartening to read that the Union Station to Pasadena light-rail line has cleared another roadblock (June 8). However, it's a big mistake to call it the Blue Line. The Blue Line already exists. It runs from downtown Long Beach to the Metro Center at 7th and Flower. It won't connect with the proposed line to Pasadena. Just think of all the frustration, aggravation and exasperation that will be inflicted on residents as they try to explain to tourists and visitors how to use the Blue Line to get from Long Beach to Pasadena or vice versa.

Several people were injured in Long Beach on Friday after a car collided with a train on the Blue Line, officials said. The crash between the northbound train and car was reported about 7 a.m. near 14th Street and Long Beach Boulevard, said Metro spokesman Jose Ubaldo. Details about how the crash occurred were not immediately available. Five people were transported to hospitals with minor injuries, according to Matthew Dobberpuhl of the Long Beach Fire Department. Five people on the train reported minor injuries, such as back and neck pain, Ubaldo said.

As officials build mass transit lines at a rapid clip, Los Angeles County's oldest and most-used light-rail system has been breaking down with alarming frequency. The Blue Line from Long Beach to downtown L.A. — one of the nation's busiest light-rail routes, with 26 million annual riders — has suffered a rash of maintenance problems that have left commuters who rely on the service facing major delays. In January and February, Blue Line trips were late or canceled 858 times — roughly 14 times a day — compared with 428 times during the first two months of 2011.

With Los Angeles and many other cities struggling to fill police ranks, a new survey among teenagers and young adults interested in law enforcement careers finds that they face many internal hurdles to crossing the thin blue line. Fear of the entrance exam was a major concern of 60% of the young people who aspire to a career in policing. Almost a third was concerned about passing the physical fitness test; another third was concerned about the interview.

I read your editorial ("Looks Like a Winner So Far," Jan. 21) about the success of the Blue Line with interest. However, I think the following should also be considered before the line is deemed a success or not: It appears that the anticipated ridership figures were set ridiculously low by the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission in order to make sure that they were exceeded by actual numbers. The current rail ridership could probably be served by about 100 new buses, at only a fraction of the capital investment.

Re "Yaroslavsky Calls for Network of Long Buses," March 20: Now we are supposed to be impressed by a bus system in Curitiba, as reviewed by some politicians on a boondoggle to Brazil. Until the last 10 years or so, Curitiba had no need for a comprehensive transportation system. The percentage of privately owned automobiles was low, so any approach to transportation would look good. I would like to know how the Curitiba situation compares to Los Angeles? A better comparison could be made with Sao Paulo, which has a long, cosmopolitan history.

The first leg of Los Angeles' sparkling new mass-transit system won't start operating until next summer, but already it is plagued by vandalism. Local transit officials say that they will have the problem under control once the system opens, but promises are not enough.

Los Angeles County transit officials Thursday budgeted $6.78 million more for improvements on the Blue Line - one of the busiest light-rail lines in the nation, with 26 million riders annually and a history of accidents and fatalities. There have been eight deaths along the Blue Line so far this year, at least four of which were suicides, according to Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials. The most recent fatality occurred Thursday about 12:45 a.m., when officials said a woman apparently tried to swerve her Hyundai around lowered gate arms at a crossing in Compton and was struck by a Blue Line train.

CHICAGO - A Chicago Transit Authority operator may have fallen asleep shortly before a train jumped the platform at O'Hare International Airport on Monday and became partially wedged atop an escalator at the end of the line, according to her union representative. Reports from the scene indicate the driver, whose name has not been released, told people she nodded off moments before the crash, said Robert Kelly, president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 308. "I can confirm that she was extremely tired," Kelly said.

Authorities Tuesday morning were transporting at least a dozen people to hospitals after a Blue Line train struck a vehicle near downtown Los Angeles. The train struck the vehicle at about 9:55 a.m. in the 300 block of East Washington Boulevard, said Katherine Main of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The sole occupant of the vehicle suffered minor injuries, Main added. In all, 13 people complained of injuries, Main said. One declined transportation to a hospital, two were in serious condition and 10 were in fair condition.

Cathy Youngblood leaves home at 5 a.m., walks a mile in the dark and catches a Blue Line train at the Watts station. She transfers to the Red Line downtown, then boards a bus at Sunset and Vermont and gets to West Hollywood at 6:45, ready for her job as a hotel housekeeper. That's the daily schlep for Youngblood, 62, whose story tells you something about the local economy. She has two college degrees, one of them in anthropology. But after working her way through school as a custodian, the housekeeping job was the best she could find.

As part of a multi-year upgrade to the aging Metro Blue Line, the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority will spend more than $850 million to purchase 78 train cars and renovate 52 more, officials said Wednesday.  The Blue Line, which connects Long Beach to downtown Los Angeles, has been plagued by maintenance-related delays  for years as Metro put off costly repairs. The $1.2-billion investment, including replacing train cars and worn overhead power lines, will erase a $391-million maintenance backlog over the next six years, spokesman Marc Littman said.

Service on the Metro Blue Line in Long Beach resumed Wednesday after being halted for more than nine hours. The train's overhead power was damaged at 9 th  Street and Long Beach Boulevard about 5:20 a.m., forcing Metro to shut down trains in downtown Long Beach. Test trains began running shortly after repairs were completed about 1:40 p.m., and full service was back just before 3 p.m., said Dave Sotero, a Metro spokesman. Service along the 22-mile stretch of light rail between the Willow Street station and downtown Los Angeles was operating normally during repairs, he said.

Service on the Metro Gold Line between Union Station and the Soto Street Station was delayed during the rush-hour commute Wednesday because of a power outage, transit officials said. Trains were sharing a single line of track, causing delays up to 15 minutes, Metro said. Earlier, service between the stations was entirely shut down for about an hour. Buses were transporting passengers from Patsaouras Plaza at Union Station to the Soto Station, Metro said on its Twitter account.

Deputies detained three juveniles on the Metro Blue Line on Tuesday evening after receiving a report that they were armed with guns, law enforcement authorities said. The three were detained at the Willow Station while deputies searched the train, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The search temporarily delayed Blue Line service, Metro said. The deputies were assisted by Long Beach police as they searched the train with their guns drawn. No weapons were found and the three teens were released, said Lt. Barry Shapiro of the Sheriff's Department's transit unit, which patrols the train lines.

It would be four miles long, serve downtown L.A. and cost "only" $125 million. Or, at least, that's what area residents and businesses were told. It turns out that the electrified trolley that downtown voters last year agreed to tax themselves in order to fund might cost more. As in upward of 100% more - and staff members in City Hall suspected as much before voters gave their OK to the project, according to a Times article Tuesday. Not surprisingly, the revelation that the streetcar project may actually cost about $327 million didn't sit well with readers.
