Bonita Unified School Board President Robert Olander II said he will honor a mandate from nearly 1,800 voters in San Dimas and La Verne and serve another term on the school board even though he withdrew from the race before election day. Olander, who quit the race last month, complaining that board members conducted business under a veil of secrecy, won Nov. 4 after his name remained on the ballots.

I'm glad Greg O'Sullivan, chairman of Citizens for Responsible Development, is willing to let the record speak for itself (Times, Sept. 15). Because in less than five months the current (San Gabriel) City Council has addressed 11 of the 21 platform issues for which CFRD campaigned so hard during the April election. Let's put it to the voters and find out how they feel about all the non-growth issues that some CFRD advocates have placed so high on their priority list. I will continue to talk and meet with members of the public, including the CFRD leadership.

A joint dedication of Oak Mesa Elementary School and adjacent Oak Mesa Park was held Tuesday by Bonita Unified School District and the city of La Verne. Members of the Bonita Unified School District Board of Education and the La Verne City Council were on hand to dedicate the school and the park, which were developed as a joint venture. Oak Mesa School opened its doors Sept. 3, relieving many students of bus rides to other elementary schools.

Biff Green has resigned from the Board of Education of the Bonita Unified School District because he is moving from the area. Green has also resigned as vice president for university relations at the University of La Verne to become president of Friends University in Wichita, Kan.

Teachers in the 9,000-student Bonita Unified School District called a one-day strike for today after contract negotiations with district representatives collapsed. The 12-school district that spans the cities of San Dimas and La Verne plans to hold classes.

Three Bonita Unified School District employees have been honored for exceptional service to the district. They are Rosemary Jespersen, secretary at La Verne Heights Elementary School; George Starkey, a seventh-grade teacher at Lone Hill Middle School, and Lorna Horton, director of elementary education for the district.
