CBS is getting more eclectic as it seeks to attract younger viewers and shed its reputation for antiquity. Take tonight, for example. The three series that CBS launches are "Dweebs," an uneven, flip-floppy disc of a comedy about computer nerds; "The Bonnie Hunt Show," an amusing, uncommonly bright, urbane and distinctive comedy about a TV reporter, and "American Gothic," a dark, gloomy, largely unrewarding science-fiction drama centering on a sinister sheriff.

Bonnie Hunt is still on a high from working with veteran comedy star Carl Reiner the day before on her new ABC sitcom, "Life With Bonnie." "It was the thrill of my life," she says breathlessly over the phone. "Carl Reiner is perfection. The crew gave him a standing ovation. For me, all is right in the world. This is all goodness. It's just nice to meet these people and be in their presence and learn from them."

SPEND AN hour or so with Bonnie Hunt these days and you come away convinced she's got a daytime talk show inside her head. The only question now is whether she and her producers can extract and polish that vision within the next three weeks, when "The Bonnie Hunt Show" comes to KNBC-TV Channel 4 and other TV stations nationwide. This is not shaping up to be -- how can we put this? -- another strenuously overproduced TV yakfest. Hunt, the 46-year-old Chicago-born comedian best known for ABC's short-lived sitcom "Life With Bonnie" as well as her work on the family-oriented "Beethoven" and "Cheaper by the Dozen" pictures, is an improv performer by background and inclination.

At Culver Studios' Stage Six, Bonnie Hunt, writer-producer-director-star of the ABC family sitcom "Life With Bonnie" is doing what she does best -- everything. She rearranges chairs at the table and squares of lasagna on the plates in the kitchen set. When she overhears her TV son Charlie Stewart try out a childish joke, she chastises him, "That's not nice humor." A few minutes later, in the same no-nonsense voice, she coaches the boy, "Keep it real, sweetheart."
