A photograph of New York Police Officer Lawrence DePrimo giving boots to a barefoot homeless man has gone viral, getting more than 400,000 "likes" on the department's Facebook page and a wave of positive media attention. The New York Times reported that DePrimo bought a $75 pair of all-weather boots for the man in Times Square, where the officer was working on a counter-terrorism detail, and helped him put them on. The picture was taken by Jennifer Foster, the communications director for the Public Safety Communications Division of the Pinal County, Ariz., Sheriff's Office.

MEXICO CITY -- That big, hulking statue of the Caucasian strongman has got to go. Such was the recommendation Friday of a special committee appointed to resolve one of the odder controversies to beset this capital. At issue: the city government's decision to allow Azerbaijan to erect a monument to its late president, Heydar Aliyev, on the iconic Reforma Boulevard, prime real estate in the sprawling megalopolis. The bronze and marble statue generated protests and a running debate in the media.

Vanessa Hudgens, the star of the Disney "High School Musical" films, is tackling more adult roles in the upcoming "Machete Kills" and "The Frozen Ground. " But the 23-year-old has retained her youthful, slightly punk edge when it comes to her personal style -- she's more likely to don a pair of combat boots on the red carpet than a pair of sparkly stilettos. When she participated in "The 24 Hour Plays," Montblanc's creative fundraiser for the Urban Arts Project, in New York City on Monday, the actress opted for a sleeveless white top, simple black pants and lace-up boots.

"The X Factor" results show Thursday packed an even bigger surprise than the return of Diamond White to the competition the previous night. No, I'm not talking about the fact that Jason Brock was sent home and that CeCe Frey had joined him in the bottom two; those results were hardly jaw-droppers. Nor am I referring to the fact that the judges "deadlocked" on the elimination decision and left it for the audience vote to decide; that seemed fairly straightforward. Nor was it unexpected that One Direction, the startlingly successful "X Factor U.K"-created boy band, would perform not one but two of their songs; that had been announced days before.

The accusations in Sam Lutfi's case against Britney Spears' parents and her conservators may have been sensational, but the evidence just didn't hold up - at least in the eyes of the judge, who tossed the suit Thursday before it made it to the jury. Lutfi's lawsuit had accused Britney's mom Lynne Spears of libel, her dad Jamie Spears of battery and her conservatorship of failing to pay him a 15% fee on the singer's income during the time he...

On Thursday, "The X Factor" brought us back to Boot Camp in Miami, where the 60 remaining contestants vied to be among the 24 acts to make it through to the next round, to be held at the judges' homes. To prove their worth, the singers would have to tackle "Task 2": They'd be divided into pairs, and each duo would be required to agree on a song and then take the stage together to sing it. These performances wouldn't really be duets, since the performers would take turns singing, with no overlap.

"The X Factor" did what it could to make the most of the hour it was allotted before the presidential debate Wednesday night. It whisked us - along with about 120 contestants - to Boot Camp in Miami, showed us the high life at a fancy hotel, and then gave us our first task: watching the contenders each sing one song of their own choosing - a high-pressure performance that would determine whether they would stay in the competition for the remainder of...

SAN DIEGO - Marine Gunnery Sgt. Douglas King, lean as a whippet and possessed of a commanding, rapid-fire voice, set the tone quickly and without equivocation as he addressed the Saturday morning assemblage of civilian runners. "You're going to get motivated, the Marine Corps way !" he bellowed. "You're going to get it whether you like it or not. " And with that, the 11th annual Boot Camp Challenge was underway - 2,000 civilians vying for the bragging rights that come with completing a three-mile obstacle course designed for recruits at the boot camp here.

A military jury at San Antonio's Lackland Air Force Base sentenced a boot camp instructor to a year in prison after finding him guilty on charges of having an unprofessional relationship with a trainee, violating an order from his commander and obstructing justice. Staff Sgt. Kwinton Estacio, 29, had faced up to 13 years in prison. The jury imposed the sentence late Wednesday. Earlier in the day, jurors acquitted Estacio of unwanted sexual contact, Lackland spokesman Brent Boller told The Times.

Pow! Hot-hued, high-impact accessories can put the finishing touch on the season's sporty looks. Take a vibrant piece, like Marni's cherry-red perforated leather bag, or 3.1 Phillip Lim's vivid yellow gold leather boots, and pair with a dress, a button-down shirt, jeans or leggings in a contrasting but equally vibrant color. Or let multihued accessories like Pierre Hardy's tricolored suede and leather wedges, Balenciaga's ostrich and calfskin ankle boots, Prada's rubber-bottom Mary Jane pumps or Céline's tricolor envelope bag do the color-blocking for you.
