Kenneth MacMillan's "Romeo and Juliet," which American Ballet Theatre is dancing here during the New York company's run through Sunday, turns 40 next year. Its longevity and long roster of stars in the title roles --beginning with, but not limited to, Rudolf Nureyev and Margo Fonteyn -- suggest it's a classic. But as seen Saturday at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, it's a classic teetering on the brink of becoming a museum piece.

The Saturday Kirov program in Segerstrom Hall seemed like old times: the same mix of "Chopiniana," "Paquita" and contemporary miniatures that the company offered on the final night of its 1986 engagement in Shrine Auditorium. "Paquita" remains one of the glories in the Kirov repertory: a suite drawn from a 19th-Century Petipa classic that tests, molds and displays the dancers technically but also allows each soloist to make a personal statement.

The floor is the star of the hourlong dance drama "Ravish" at the New LATC through Sunday. Sometimes it's outlined in intense golden light, but it's just as likely to turn into a giant dining room table or sketch-pad or bed, thanks to Barnaby Levy's video projections. At one point, it even becomes a phantom ballroom with ghostly dancers whirling across it.

DANCE in Southern California had its share of milestones in 2005. Three contenders announced their intention to create world-class ballet companies in the Southland -- none more promising than Ethan Stiefel, the new artistic director of Ballet Pacifica. The Dance at the Music Center series presented its first dauntingly expensive, top-of-the-line international ensemble: Russia's superb Kirov Ballet. And two television networks discovered how dance could serve the needs of reality TV through L.A.

When the Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg returns to the Orange County Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, its six-performance run will be the first of two Southern California engagements within a month for the Russian company: On June 23, it will give the first of four performances at the Los Angeles Music Center. Now 28 years old, the Eifman troupe started out as the St. Petersburg Ballet Theater, and its rise to international prominence coincided with a convulsive era in its homeland.
